hi there
we're on the heart and marina tropical
let me sum up the last seven days of
boat work for you all right so we're
perfecting our methods right now I've
got this chisel ready and we're scraping
off our barrier boat down to bare
fiberglass and at the moment these tools
seem to be the best that we have we have
an orbital sander we have a grinder but
we don't just don't have the right
attachments and mainly we need something
flexible that's not going to take divots
out of the hole so this is working and
so we're going with it we have had an
issue with our keel pushing up into the
boat and it's cracked where the ribs
connect to the stringers again is this
should we you know scrap this but we've
heard a lot of people say that this is
this is a disaster get out just throw
this boat in the junkyard you have major
structural problems and regardless of
how much work and effort and money you
put into it you won't come out on top
this is a never-ending money pit scale
of one to ten how big of a deal is this
scale of one to ten listen one less than
what's in one okay it's not a big issue
at all okay I'll uh fara scrapping the
boat boy I don't see any reason you
think we can sell in this boat for a
little bit longer for a lot longer
probably if you repainted Disney do what
you're doing I don't know how and fix
everything my show your sails and musket
concern around a well not a problem not
a problem and so keep the boats are
quite strong structurally and the
designers could tell you son a problem
as long as you make sure that you
worry about these things and fix them
when they okay keep an eye on everything
to make sure it's okay lots of other
things you need to check like your stern
bearings and your rudder bearings and
make sure that you're not worn out and
compass bearings and get your
maintenance up I'm gonna do no problem
okay you won't lose the strength in the
hole not in this hole I'm a fiberglass
boats different story but for this boat
for these series about the way they'll
built the way that is on will not lose
more than about 10 to 14 percent of
their initial strength and the hoes have
built anyway I've built a race and you
know I'm gonna race it don't back it up
and it should be alright I heard you
were a naval architect correct a naval
architect is a professional engineer who
is responsible for the design
construction and repair of ships boats
other marine vessels and offshore
structures both civil and military
including merchant ships boiled gas
tankers cargo ships cruise or liners etc
people actually paid you to survey their
boats yes I registered ship right so
you're a registered in Australia but I
do not do commercial work I need to
maybe work and go where your new
commercial ro it's a lesser
qualification than what I have but the
most important thing I have is when a
man wants or a woman or a couple want to
go by boat they're falling in love with
it
this is that dream they sit at night and
drink coffee
ramen River in the dreamer how their
life is going to be sailing away to the
Caribbean on this beautiful boat but the
broker sits here thinking wow I can send
my Sunday University I can do this I can
do this and the other things she says
I'm glad I got rid of that piece of
shoot I'm happy now so when when they
should they come to you in the morning
everybody shakes your hand and they want
a squid story if she's selling hey you
got osmosis reduce hole hey you've got
killed by a falling off the bracket
hates you forever
Cynthia Syl I hate you forever Clint the
buyer hate you forever
everybody's broken dreams so I don't
like it
intelligent and that's it how many boats
do you think if you just off the top of
your head have you surveyed rough number
by ten a hundred hundreds hundreds of
boats see five hundred hundreds of boats
okay hundred chicken hundreds and big
ones small ones chips
you were saying you wouldn't necessarily
worry about a putting it in the water to
level it out or be trying to figure out
a way to prop it up it might help but it
doesn't seem as though you're saying
it's it's a must that we absolutely need
to do that before moving forward with
this no I don't think so I can't see any
stress-related fractures when it was
explained to me I thought your problem
is much more serious than what it is it
was something that I understood they
opened up recently always new again hmm
it was an old repair that had opened up
right which indicated to me that you had
some stress something in you and there's
no stress here this stress this is a
wall there's nothing new here there's no
sign that water's come in anywhere as I
said you'd see it in a fire station
there song anyway it's not so it's not
leaking any water there's nothing that
goes through the hole there's no stress
cracks here or on the outside I had a
good look and saw it the first day and
there's no stress great so you've got no
movement in the fiberglass
that's what that's what that's just
gonna be amazing this one it's a full
skill that is a true peel that I would
almost be certain it's a result are you
going
not you but someone in this boat having
gone background okay set on the bottom
okay I'm pump pump okay
almost I've seen that many many times
that you're not related to that there's
no longer to ignore connection between
them in except a tongue-and-groove on
the back of your keel right so for that
to crack there no no no it's not
connected do two different things if
this was a problem you'd see it with a
glass turn underneath to crack the glass
underneath when they lifted it no no no
sometimes if you look underneath now
you'll see you'll see no you'll see no
long crack okay sorry
what they did is they put that they
realize the teams and these want ominous
racing it's in their quirky you have to
steer a very ancient away so what they
do is they put the keel on the back to
give them more where they call lateral
resistance also it helps for the sinner
and if it center of effort is you draw
the boat and you put the mast and you
put the sails in you put where that with
the balance of that is and then you look
at your keel and you put your balance of
that and that gives you your efforts and
the electoral resistances what moves
always and so by adding the fourth keel
not that made it easy to Steve while
making the keel a little bit longer okay
a little bit slower downwind but you
wouldn't notice though but when you're
looking for writing these were rated as
a one-ton are under Ohio are mark to or
mark 3 io r means International offshore
rule which is that rule that all boats
used to measure
so they measure the boats and they see
so this boat also is failing the floors
and comes up quickly I'm still in being
around right that's a rating quirk I've
gotta give it a better rating so you can
actually get a faster poem for the same
measurement size they've cut a piece of
plywood to suit shaped it slipped it in
the back of the queue glass then glass
it along the hall but when a glass along
the hall that would push it a little bit
further over into the keel but not far
okay until I saw it's held on port side
on the starboard side by a layer of
glass and it's held down the leading
edge okay wanna kill okay okay ah there
is nothing to connect through an
engineering forces that do that where is
it it's not there what you'd expect is
that when you run aground in a boat you
crack the front not necessarily - that's
the time the frames crack at the back
exam where most of the weight of the
boat is not there the way is stiffness
bar it up he's simple he had a piece of
quarter inch stainless step and that's
okay be in that long that white up now
all of you three one six tonus drill a
hole through for your sights you want to
m10 at least okay
depends on how many you put in you know
whether you put in 12 to put less if you
put can't you put more countersink the
hole up around the hole 11 I'm saying is
it's this case screw through countersunk
screw that way when you got it it'll be
flush there are places in this country
themselves countersink screws you want
to go down probably
that's all - with the screen okay and
you probably want about two and a half
inches now possibly three inches yeah I
got to fire coming out of one okay and
you could also consider one here that
there appears to be a hole in the
fiberglass on the side of the keel if it
was indeed leaking something what I was
coming through the bilge pump red one
but more importantly you did leave
assault assault crustacean there okay so
you'd see it visibly just be a white
thing and you say that once a filler one
mm-hmm someone's trying to fill
something here but I'd say definitely
get a beat socket and a big shifter and
big bar cart in these cool ones taking
these down okay or you never been done
but this is where you want the owner
Paul writes on okay hello all that
removing and also pull them both
together
okay you that's correct your weakness
it's not coming in the way just since it
approves apart okay sorry
this will hold that to this and it'll
help okay

this week we also got to tour a 75-foot
three-masted schooner and met the family
who owns and operates this all steel
vessel be sure to subscribe and be on
the lookout for this boat tour coming
soon whoa here's the engineer in life
and stay tuned for the continuing story
