Winded Voyage, Episode 3 takes us to the south of France so we can have a look at real boats I saw online. It's about a six hour drive from Montreux Switzerland to Palavas-les-Flots, my first destination. I scheduled meetings with different brokers and a variety of different boats, from size, condition and of course prices. The selection is vast, and the only way to get a feeling for a boat is to get inside it. In this episode you get a real inside look at vessels for sale in a small part of the south of France. Will I find my vessel for my Winded Voyage? Stay tuned.

to the south of France from what I'd
0:22
seen online the French had a great
0:24
selection of used boats so I've come
0:27
more than five hours of driving I pulled
0:29
into my convoys I've just arrived here
0:38
it's about five o'clock and it's pretty
0:41
impressive everywhere
0:43
and it's warm I just called up the
0:52
gentleman Michel he apparently lives
0:55
here on a boat 60-foot catch and he's
0:59
gonna meet me here in his parking lot he
1:01
said hey are you on near the pyramid
1:03
building and I guess this is a pyramid
1:06
building and so I'm gonna come and meet
1:09
me and give me some some pointers some
1:11
suggestions and he's curious about my
1:14
project a very good friend of mine
1:15
suggested I meet his friend Michelle
1:17
who's been living on this 60-foot catch
1:20
for years
1:22
the government suggested I look at the
1:28
kill you
1:28
53 a motor sailor fit the sail with
1:32
powerful 50 horsepower diesel engine two
1:36
cabins and very comfortable to live on
1:50
he was also very sure I needed a vessel
1:52
that is at least 32 foot in length best
1:55
navigate the Mediterranean and routes I
1:58
wanna go Michelle is nearly 80 years old
2:06
79 and a half he says he sailed all over
2:10
the world and really knows what he's
2:12
talking about he guided me around the
2:14
marina pointing out different boats that
2:16
would meet my needs as well as
2:19
opportunities that could be advantageous
2:21
like this boat which seemed forgotten
2:24
and in good shape
2:30
apparently this boat is a possibility so
2:34
people next door here said this guy is
2:37
not feeling well and he's gotta sell his
2:39
boat apparently this thing sailed all
2:41
over the Greek isle you could both like
2:48
an 11 meter or something maybe not he
2:54
also seemed to know better when I needed
2:55
and I did to be quite honest I did not
2:59
really know what I wanted and was even
3:00
more clueless of what I needed yesterday
3:02
I had the incredible pleasure of hanging
3:05
out with Michel yay he is 80 years old
3:10
and I can't believe it he told me
3:12
his story about how he crossed the
3:14
Atlantic and then went through the
3:16
Panama and then ended up crossing the
3:20
entire Pacific to New Caledonia took him
3:23
three months to deliver a boat
3:40
this is Padova they flew it's on the
3:46
Mediterranean coast I'm going to check
3:50
out my first boats here definitely a
3:56
maritime little community there's kids
4:00
over there getting ready to sail in
4:01
their optimism
4:05
I guess it's vacation time for the
4:07
French
4:24
he showed me a 36-foot general sentence
4:27
very nice clean cockpit all the winches
4:32
and cleats on the roof but I could just
4:35
stand up barely being tall in this
4:38
instance is not an advantage
4:40
it had three cabins of the berth in a
4:43
bow
4:43
closets the galleys on the port side and
4:46
just aft is the navigation table perfect
4:49
for me to screw down a computer for
4:51
editing films it has a big salon in two
4:53
large F Cabot's each with a bathroom the
4:56
30 horsepower Yanmar motor is in the
4:58
center of the boat which allows room in
5:00
a stern for the cabin well I just saw a
5:02
really cool boat and I could really
5:06
picture myself living in that boat mr.
5:08
Emmanuel panthenol is very very nice
5:10
very gracious he thinks that she can
5:13
make an offer around 35,000 euros now
5:19
I'm going to cap dag to see some other
5:21
boats at a place called Pass vegetable
5:25
this is the marina of cap tech I am here
5:29
checking on another boat and I just
5:32
walked in into a cellar
5:35
who's gonna show me a gypsy catch catch
5:38
many as to mass but it's pretty amazing
5:41
that I could actually live here live
5:46
here on my boat
5:48
amongst all these boats these people
5:51
here and once you pay for your mooring
5:54
all year long basically you've paid your
5:57
rent and you've got electricity and
5:59
water that's all included we get to pay
6:02
for your phone and my objective is to
6:06
become a solid seaworthy sailor to learn
6:09
and be one with my vessel for the winter
6:11
months before I sail for the open waters
6:13
starting off in the South of France is
6:16
ideal for me plus I speak the language
6:18
get a melody David was very professional
6:23
and knowledgeable he explained details
6:26
of the book which were new to me I am a
6:28
novice sailor at best there's a three
6:31
speed winches explained a transferable
6:34
stay for a storm jib you unlock to stay
6:37
from the port side clamp it to the
6:39
center of the deck send off your storm
6:41
tip then there's the survival life draft
6:44
which is under the cockpit bench
6:47
according to David it's pretty useless
6:49
to have it there if you need to get at
6:52
it throw it overboard apparently the
6:54
thing weighs about 40 kilos and by the
6:57
time get it out it may already be too
6:59
late
7:00
he thinks it's pointless to have it
7:02
under there there is one important
7:06
criteria for me very important for me to
7:08
be able to stand up 1978 melody this
7:12
boat had more Headroom in the Sundance
7:14
two cabins galley etc it also had a 30
7:18
horsepower in Mar engine which had been
7:20
recently serviced but David explains
7:22
basic boat buying rules when you make an
7:24
offer it's under reserve that the engine
7:27
is functioning properly under reserve
7:29
the hall is solid so on and so on
7:32
he says he would not buy both without
7:34
getting a surveyors opinion it's worth
7:36
the few hundred euros for inspection
7:38
when you're gonna spend several thousand
7:40
this vote is another possibility
7:42
if a gypsy 3737 foot catch pretty huge
7:50
the huge it's a pretty good condition 78
7:52
1978 a little bit of cosmetic work
7:56
inside which I could deal with boat that
7:59
could probably cruise to go around the
8:02
world amazing
8:05
I'm loving this what comes with the boat
8:09
is a parking spot here in this parking
8:11
lot
8:14
bathrooms garbage and showers that are
8:19
cleaned and look at that right next to
8:22
the beach right over there
8:23
I like that boat in fact every time I
8:27
see a boat I like it it's gonna be a
8:30
very tough decision but this one is a
8:32
good good deal I guess I can take that
8:35
boat off the list that's just been sold
8:37
she just told me now and the owners just
8:42
accept that I guess an offer and it's
8:44
been sold so I guess gonna have to look
8:46
at other boats
8:49
she had a nice selection about so she
8:52
showed me three first it gypsy Gin Fizz
8:56
catch then we went to see if gypsy
8:58
masters 34 we couldn't visit for long as
9:01
the owners grandson was living aboard it
9:04
was another good option in the price of
9:05
30 thousand euros was negotiable plenty
9:09
of headroom two cabins I liked it but it
9:12
had some elements missing such as a
9:14
general cell and a VHF radio due to some
9:17
romantic dispute this back here is a
9:20
first 35 designed by Philip Starck the
9:24
famous French designer I think the
9:28
interior and everything is really cool
9:29
it's kind of kind of cool design it's a
9:33
bit more racy a bit more modern but one
9:36
thing that's great on I can stand up in
9:37
it need some work needs to be checked
9:40
out
9:41
but it's definitely good deal it's
9:44
30,000 euros I could probably get a deal
9:48
on it find the
9:52
Naval Yard where there's boat to me to
9:56
look at think I made it my last day I
10:16
went to mock teak near Marseilles this
10:19
was the location of a dry dock with lots
10:21
of boats to visit very easily in one
10:24
location apparently you can come here
10:28
and live here on your boat while it's in
10:32
dry dock
10:33
so I can come here live on my boat fix
10:39
it up until I'm ready to take it out to
10:41
sea and when you live here you have
10:43
showers bathrooms electricity apparently
10:48
even internet and it cost at this it
10:52
would cost like a thousand bucks a year
10:54
okay so I live in a boat and I can park
10:57
my car here and everything and live here
10:59
in the South of France for a while so
11:01
I'll get my boat ready here we're not
11:07
eating macaque - a drydock boatyard
11:10
managed by Joe Mack and obviously he's
11:13
got a lot of boats here that are dried
11:14
so he's giving me the keys and a ladder
11:17
to go check out a couple boats that are
11:19
in my budget my thighs
11:22
we're gonna go see a Neptune 94 and a do
11:29
fool 36 or 38 I think in my price range
11:33
and so I'm gonna grab my ladder here
11:37
this is a Neptune 94 so interesting
11:46
about this thing it's only 15 thousand
11:49
year old so let's see what we get for
11:51
fifteen thousand euros probably not the
11:54
same as what you get for thirty-nine
11:56
thousand but nonetheless let's have a
11:59
look I need to change things like this
12:15
Neptune is an interesting option for me
12:17
it's only fifteen thousand five hundred
12:19
euros needs a lot of work but I could do
12:22
all the renovations at the dry dock with
12:24
a great selection of professionals which
12:27
would also allow me to learn valuable
12:29
boat knowledge
12:35
this is really cool interesting here I
13:12
don't know to frame the only problem
13:41
with this boat the only other one common
13:45
but it's got to be only what they call
13:52
my brother got a nice galley it looks in
14:00
pretty good shape the bilge pump going
14:03
on and off by itself that's got a good
14:06
amount of sales nice quote up spot and I
14:10
love the office area here you can look
14:14
at the engine
14:22
this is a contest
14:25
3434 foot up and say Dutch made boats
14:33
yeah contest well-reputed boats they're
14:39
solid both the Dutch make some pretty
14:42
good boats and since they're all
14:43
obviously didn't 800 cabin for all dude
14:47
like me
14:47
this contest is in really great shape
14:50
ready to sail in obviously ready to live
14:53
in the 39,000 500 euro price tag
14:56
reflects the difference from the net
14:58
tuna 15,000 or so take the GoPro to have
15:24
a look at the cabins because it's kind
15:27
of wide angle lens and you get a better
15:29
perspective of things
15:50
and contest is a very nice boat I could
15:59
picture myself in this boat it's big a
16:02
lot of room five storage this is this
16:06
kind of bullying definitely my preferred
16:09
possibility here nice big boat a contest
16:16
ready to go ready to sail the world
16:18
actually it's big enough the last boat I
16:32
saw was another gypsy Gin Fizz catch
16:34
like the one that was sold yesterday the
16:37
center cockpit is deep in comfort which
16:39
makes it safe and reassuring the aft
16:42
cabin is separate good to put the guests
16:44
in you may have come along with you and
16:46
at 25,000 it's also possibility
17:55
if you keel falls off you're pretty much
17:58
up shits Creek I think I'm done with my
18:07
research of boats here in France
18:10
finished up with my fatigue which is
18:12
very interesting because there are a
18:14
Naval Yard and as you can see there are
18:18
a lot of boat for sale lots of
18:23
possibilities for people like me who
18:27
want to just off get blown around
18:30
the world now I only have one regret
18:32
right next to the Neptune was this Chile
18:35
a 50:33 the boat styling category that
18:38
best fits my needs I may have to come
18:41
back here and I certainly will come back
18:43
to the South of France
18:44
that's all part of my winded voyage stay
18:46
tuned
