In this episode of Sailing A B Sea there's an unseen problem that could potentially cause big issues.
We also begin our journey back east across the Aegean Sea and make stops at a few more beautiful Greek islands that we hadn't yet visited. We're feeling great, but then Aannsha finds an unseen problem.

Well that's not good there's obviously
some sort of electrical
discharge in the engine because that's
the only thing that the prop shaft is
connected to. That means calling in an
expert because that's way beyond me
So really we've got to now try and get
to Bodrum
or Marmaris as quickly as possible and get
that looked at otherwise
the prop shaft and the prop are just
going to be cactus and that's expensive
This was our anchorage last night and we
can confirm that the holding here
is mud, sand and small
pebbles it is thick on the anchor so
a really good place if there's a blow
even if it's a lee shore
if you've got an anchor that'll go in
and stay in, no worries
And we've just moved out to this
position here
there's a big boat ahead of us that's
anchored. This is the
northern end of Evia Island, this is
mainland Greece and we're heading
northeast. If we
scale out we're now at 24 miles so it's
about 24 miles
until we exit this channel and we're
hoping to get through here without any
wind coming in because it will come from
this direction
and that will create waves that we're
going to have to fight against
Then once we're out we are heading to
this island here called Skiathos which
is
48 miles away and that's roughly where
we're going to anchor
What you doing Baz? Well it's Saturday
morning so it's time to
put our latest video out to public on
YouTube
and then we've got to put it out onto
Facebook
and just basically ... Share the love
Share the love and answer comments and questions
Whoopsie we forgot to put the cameras on
when we were coming in here sorry
Yeah uh where is here? Here is Skiathos
very close to ... it's the little bay just
around from Skiathos town
We've chosen here because we didn't
really want to get into the hustle and
bustle of Skiathos town itself because
there's quite a few ferries and it gets
a bit
choppy when they come in and out - yeah
so this is a nice
spot we're in about seven metres of water
dropped into a patch of sand in between
sand and weed
and we've got 42 metres out which is
a scope of six to one
which means that when the Meltemi
starts blowing it like billy-oh
on Monday if the prediction is correct
we should be fabulously settled.
Coz it'll be coming from there
yeah and I've just dived the anchor and
it's dug in like a tick all you can see
is the roll bar and just the top of the
shaft so
And that's what we like to see - yeah
So yeah we'll be here for
a day or two
yeah yeah tomorrow and obviously we're
not going anywhere Monday if
it is windy. Well yeah unless it's really good windy
unless it's the perfect wind for us so we'll
take it. Yeah and then we're going south
Oh except we want to go to Skopilos
which is over there yeah
All right. All right! Beer time hey?
Tea time. A cup of tea
Many of you have asked about
the costs associated with
keeping A B Sea on the
hard at Livaditis boatyard
just north of Limni on Evia Island
in Greece for eight months
Let's start off with the haul out, the
hard stand
and the splash cost. The complete cost
for that
depending on the size of your vessel can
range from 300 to 500 euros
We paid 400 for that service. Being on
the hard
per month cost us 100 euros per month
and that
price range would vary depending on the
length of your vessel or whether you're
a monohull
or a catamaran. The onsite studios come
in two sizes
and the smaller studio apartment that we
stayed in
because we were staying over the winter
months and for quite a few months
cost us 150 euros per month with
electricity being extra
and we were charged 150 euros for
five months of electricity usage
Also while we were on the hard our
electricity usage was
metered at the boat as well and that was
charged
at 50 euros. So when you add that lot
together
Haul and splash was 400 euros
Eight months on the hard was 800 euros
five months in the apartment
was 750 euros
and the apartment and hard stand
electrical costs
combined were 200 euros
giving us a total of
2,150 euros which converts to
3,545 Australian dollars
If you're interested in keeping your
boat at Livadatis boatyard over the
winter
then I'll put Xaris's email address in
the description below this video
We're going out for a meal, we're going
out for meal, hahaha
No more water up the arse end
That's good
The gypsies are in town
We're going to get a brand new cover for
the seat and
the storage compartment made when we get
back to Turkey
Our longtime subscribers and patrons
Heather and John Drummond aka
The Old Travel Bums sent us a little bit
of a gift
and said when you get to your first
anchorage here's some cash
go and buy yourself a nice meal and a
nice bottle of wine
to celebrate going through the eight and
a half months of
maintenance and getting back in the
water successfully
yes and it wasn't a little bit of a gift
it was very generous - it was huge
thank you very much, very generous
So here we are in
Skiathos and the first anchorage we were
at last night was
not so special, I think this is very
special so we're going to find a nice
a nice restaurant here. Plenty to choose
from and they're all
begging for not literally begging but
they're so empty and there's hardly
anybody here at all
I mean this is the middle of July yeah
and the place is dead
but that's not going to spoil our meal
not tonight. Not tonight Josephine
And we've chosen this fish tavern
because um they've got a special on
anchovies at the moment so I
think we're going to have anchovies to start
So we were coaxed in by the owner of the
restaurant telling us that the anchovies
were on special
we've ordered them for our starter
Fried crispy - with a Greek salad and then we're
having the
mixed fish platter for two for main
and some white wine
And some lovely white. It's so exciting!
It's actually great and it's a lovely
view and the guy's really nice
I mean you know compared to where we
were three months ago
sweating and cursing and bleeding
and ... Well that was you ... stressing
about the bloody cutlass bearing
yeah here we are now in Skiathos
the engine is running perfectly. I've
been babying it now for two days
I'm going to keep my eye on it for a
week I think
just to be sure to be sure but
everything looks to be running great
and um we're doing okay
Yeah so after eight and a half months of staying
with us
while we've been on hard
this is us now bringing you
more beautiful islands and sailing yeah
so thank you for staying with us
yeah you did good
We'll show you the food when it arrives.
Oops, sorry!
the um anchovies were so tasty when they
arrived
we hooked into them before we remembered
to take a shot of them but they
are yummy yummy yummy
Oh okay Heather and John don't you wish
you were here?
we've got octopus uh this looks like
tuna
calamari and calamari over here
some sort of white fish which looks
yummy anyway and more calamari,
prawns, and more sardines YUM!
Yummo and that looks like sword fish
Oh this looks so good doesn't it?
Let's eat it before it gets cold! Chuckles
All righty
I'll need an antihistamine.
Mm? Antihistamine. You will.
Normally in July this is very very very busy
This year is uh
tragic. This is three years I work here
Yeah. This is the first year that it's very
very dead - c vir us
Last year I started 22 April
Yep. And I here one week only here. Wow
Only one week now? So this year will
be a very bad year for the islands
from I think ia not only from here
For all of the Aegean. Yeah I think.
What can you do? Nothing. Yeah. Just smile and enjoy yeah yes
Thank you, thank you very much
I am so stuffed - laughs
Pleasantly so. Yeah that was fantastic
that food was, I mean,
it's just so good having seafood
when you haven't had it for a long time
that was really good. It was
and it was just beautifully presented
and it was very well cooked and
Dimitrius, the guy that looked after us
was very attentive
and yeah it was great, everything was great
So back to the boat before it gets dark
it gets dark and then
I think i'm gonna have an early night tonight
Yeah it's been quite a big day actually
It's been a large day
I mean look the last
certainly the last week has been so
frenzied with big jobs
you know finalizing things
and then and then
last minute things that didn't work and
Baz having to
you know like pull his finger out in
an extra magical way and ... that sounds bad
Big laughs
but anyway you know what I'm saying
so we've got man stick
flanges and pulling his finger out in an
extra magical way
We're going good here, that's three for three!
Anyway so what we're saying is like it's
been really frenzied and
very stressful and
so busy with just - physically as well
hasn't it?
yeah mentally I think mentally we are just
tired and
all right really really pleased to be on
the move again yeah
it's great. I bet you are as well
Laughs
All right see ya see ya
And with our car
parked next to our hous
we are now back to
our anchorage
The town is just around that little
headland there
and this is what we're greeted with this
evening
A very nice sunset, no wind
not a lot of roll
and the perfect setting for a perfect
relaxing night's sleep
The next day after a great night's sleep
we upped anchor and we headed to
Alonnisos
When I was raising the anchor I noticed
that the last few metres of chain were
twisted
but I had no way at the time of
untwisting the chain
as you'll see when we drop anchor at
Alonnisos
this caused real problem
because the chain jumped completely off
the gypsy [Baz shouts "stand on the chain"]
and fell really quickly into the water
I couldn't hear Baz shouting at me to
jump into the anchor locker
onto the chain to stop it. I knew that if
I tried to catch the chain with my hands
I could do myself some real damage so I
waited until the rode was left
and when I saw this white rope I knew
that it would be easy enough for me to
catch hold of that
which I did and I was then able to pull
up
enough chain to get it back onto the
gypsy and wind it back with the windlass
You can see Baz putting on his dive gear
this morning, that's because he's going
down
to put a new anode on the prop shaft
because
um when I went to dive the anchor
yesterday I noticed that it had fallen
off
and we need an anode on there because it
just keeps it
safe from any stray electrical currents
because any two different types of metal
in the salt water
create a battery and exchange
ions and so you don't want the ions out
of your
stainless steel prop shaft exchanged
so that's why you use the anode because
it is
gives off its ions easier
Give me the anode - 2 pieces
Just the two pieces and
zip ties
Okay
Well that's not good um there's
obviously some sort of uh
electrical discharge in the engine
because that's the only thing that the
prop shaft is
connected to so we're gonna have to find
out
what that fault is and that's that that
means calling in an expert because
that's way beyond me, boat electronics
at that level
so really we've got to now try and get
to Bodrum
or Marmaris as quickly as possible and
get that looked at otherwise we're going
to get
the prop shaft and the prop are just going
to be cactus
and that's expensive
Right let's get
this show on the road
