In this episode of Sailing A B Sea Baz goes off buying boat bits in Bodrum Turkey, while Aannsha stays home to finished editing a new video. Both equally important jobs, but who has the most fun?
Buying boat bits in Bodrum involves a taxi ride and some very kind help from a Turkish stranger.

Behind me is the small harbour of Knidos
We stuck our nose in there
It is so so busy so we've
dropped anchor here
outside of Knidos but unfortunately it's
very very rolly. We're going to move on
to Datça
meanwhile birthday girl Aannsha is
having a swim
off the back of the boat
This morning we leave this little bay
and we head
a little bit further east
into the huge bay
that Bodrum resides in and at Bodrum
we've got a bit of a plan. Aannsha's
going to stay
on board while I go ashore and grab a
taxi and head to the
big Bodrum boat porn
shop. We've got a list as long as my arm
are things that I want to try and pick
up, hopefully they should have a lot of
it because
people have said they've got tons of
stuff there. So it's just a few hours to
Bodrum
We are not going to stay there because
there's a big blow coming in from the
north
with predicted gusts up to 37 knots
and we're going to try and get a
bit further east
where it's not so bad
So that's the plan for today
Yeah
Better get that engine fired. Okay
Well I've just got back from a very
interesting time
ashore at ... Do my ears look funny
with this mask on?
... ashore at Bodrum and I went to
this place, it is a kind of a mix between
a superstore
for boat bits and a bunnings warehouse
in Australia
So let me just get myself together here
and show you what we bought. We have
eight fenders on board and one of them
is well useless because
it's a pancake so I
bought another one to replace it
obviously we need to get it inflated
and maybe we can get it done in Marmaris
if we go there
if not, Kaş. We also bought eight
of these which are fender socks
I, I, you know I splashed out a bit um
because these are good quality and uh
they're gonna last a long time and so
these fender socks go on the fenders
and stop the fenders getting damaged
from uv light
and also protect the side of the boat so
I got eight of those for our eight fenders
Oh I got this which is
basically a foam with a sticky back on
it and
I'm gonna cut this to required size
and replace the seals of the fridge
because even though we we did a little
bit of that
Sikaflex around the outside of the
fridge where it was
definitely leaking uh cold air it's
still
coming on in the night time a bit too
much so I'm going to replace the
the rubber and I think this is the right
size, so that's that
This beast here was
almost pretty much half
of the budget we spent
This is a ArgoFet battery isolator
because when we got our batteries and
alternator tested
in theD-marin marina and Didim the
guy said look you know
your your thing is broken and it is an
old diode battery
separator. I've since learned
on YouTube that
the diode battery separator
is kind of like ... you earn a hundred
dollars at your job
and then there's a middleman who says
tell you what I'm gonna put
your earnings into
three bank accounts because we've got
three battery banks
but I'm going to take 70 percent of
your earnings
and distribute the remaining 30%
equally to your batteries. This guy here
distributes 99% of the power from the
alternator to
the batteries equally, so that's going to
be a huge
improvement on our power production
management system
Expensive bit of kit but well worth it.
I also
bought one of these which basically
allows you to take off your oil filters
and fuel filters
without stabbing them with a screwdriver
and getting oil everywhere
This is a controllable filter
remover
which is great because it's just so
messy removing filters
Bought another anode for the keel uh
it's always good to have one, I mean the
keel anode is in
100% perfect condition
but I just like to keep
spares on board
This turned out to be a
bit of a disappointment
this is an led light globe to
replace the ones
in the heads and there are two
in each head
in the light fitting but they only had
one on the shelf, I wanted four
obviously so I'm going to put that in
and see what it looks like
compared to the incandescent light globe
So somewhere along the line I'll be
buying another three of those
Bought a load of these
because the clips on our bimini
are sun damaged - one failed and so I
figured well they're all the same age
we might as well replace them all so
there's one two three four on the bimini
and there's two here on the spray hood
so we're going to replace
all of those with these brand new ones
so there's that
Bought a heap of these as well, this is
the biggest one they had in stock
and there was this amazing Turkish
guy
who had a t-shirt on that looked similar
to the t-shirt that the guys at work at
the store had on
so I said excuse me do you work here
he said no
but I kind of live here so I can help
you find things
and I'm not sure if he knew what he was
taking on because
my list of things to buy
was very very long
but he was ever so
helpful, he knew where
everything was and he said
what I can do is
... because I don't need this little bit
here, I can cut that off
and then get a heat source on that and
bend the hook out to
make it a bit bigger
to match the needs
that I have with that
Oh yeah I also bought
some little ones as well
So that was my trip
to the boat porn shop in Bodrum and
today is my day for putting these things
into place where they're needed
So there's swimmers right at the shore
Okay drop it
Go to 30
No, go to 40
Forty
Halfway to the water line
Feed it to the water line. Okay
Is it okay?
Not sure
D'you want me to dive it?
Ooh that's nice, oh yeah
I'm very happy to change out these
incandescent for LED
Power saving and a much nicer kind of
light as well, definitely going to be
buying more of those
Side by side you can certainly see that
they are two very different
kind of strap... tighteners but it will
do the job
the broken bit of the plastic here has
gone
so one two three holes one two three
holes and then the other bit comes
through here
through there and we just
tighten it off. So gonna replace all of
those now
on the bimini and the spray hood
That's the first couple of buckles in place
and you know they're quite easy to
attach and nice and easy to close
so I've done both of these on the back
end of the bimini
but I've got to say I'm quite
disappointed in the the quality of these
buckles, I did buy two extra which is
quite fortunate because two of them have
already broken
you can see the the hinge or the pin
there, it's broken off on
that side, it's not in
that hole
but it's stuck in that hole so
yeah the build quality is
leaving a lot to be desired
A couple of
other things we got from the boat pawn
shop were these new drinks holders the
The ones we had originally were from the
Ark and I bought
an extra big shackle there to get that
pulley up
above the arm of the outboard engine
Well that's the first of our fender
socks
put on and it's a very snug fit
it's quite a challenge to get it on so
make sure you get the correct size for
your size fender and
that way you'll get the good snug fit
and there won't be any play in it
so it will not slip off and it certainly
won't
make wear and tear for the actual fender
sock. So yeah
on to the next seven fenders
Obviously stress levels are different for
different people, what you might stress
about I might not stress about
what I stress about you might not stress
about, but it's been
18 days since we left
Limni on Evia Island
in Greece, we are now in Turkey and we
are anchored up in this
beautiful little ba, there's not a lot here
but greenery and
nature and fish. What I'm trying to
convey here is that it's taken me
this long to wind down
from our eight and a half months on the
hard with all the things
While we've been
travelling from Greece to Turkey
I've been monitoring the engine on an
almost
hourly basis just to make sure that
everything is
holding together there are no leaks
there's no
water ingress from anything we've done
work wise below the water line
and basically just
you know getting from Greece into Turkey,
checking into Turkey and all of that
sort of stuff
and meeting up with friends
today I woke up and for the first time
I just felt
okay I can just chill and relax now
You know we've gone to Bodrum
and gone to the big boat porn shop and
bought lots of things
in fact I'm still in the process
of applying
fender socks to fenders but I just
thought I'd take this moment to
share this with you if you're
considering this lifestyle
so yeah today's the day
I finally went, I'm chilling
let go of some of that stress

Thanks for being there we really

This anchorage
is super chill but it's also super busy
the name of the place is on the screen
right now and we are in Turkey, the
bottom here
is fine sand covered with pebbles and
some weed and we
are in 10 metres with 42 metres of chain
out. The gusts generally prevail
from the north west and we've had
maximum of about 25 knots of gusts while
we've been here. Onshore facilities are
literally non-existent
this guy here with the campervan
and the tent set up
he does serve food and drink of some
sort so he probably makes that his
summertime business
the rest of the people on shore are
just coming and going
as daytime or a couple-of-day campers
It is a very large bay
a lot of the
boats that come in here do
come in and have a line ashore and one
or two just like ourselves
actually just drop the hook and swing freely
This bay is open to the south and also
to the southeast
All right it is time to move on from
here
and go all the way
down here to Knidos
where we will meet up with our buddy
boat Acheron and the guys on board
They're coming from that island there so
they'll be coming around here
obviously we're coming around here - who
knows we might even meet in the middle
yeah and it's a special day today
because ...
it is a special day today isn't it
why is that? It's my birthday
Happy birthday to you
It's a big one this year as well
Ooh that's what she said [Laughs]
All right bring that anchor up and let's
be on the road
What a great way to begin my birthday
Sailing out of a beautiful calm anchorage
and sailing off to another fantastic
anchorage that has ruins and
beautiful surroundings and
our number one patron, Jim Furness
waiting at the other end
can't complain eh!
Dolphins
there's a whole pod of them over there
There is Knidos
which we're hoping to go to for tonight
but maybe too busy not sure
Thinking if there's space on the
restaurant jetty
we might take it, it would be a lot easier
than anchoring in that
confined space
Do you want to get a
couple of lines ready
in case we do decide to go alongside?
Let's go in and take a look
Very sketchy
I'm gonna go out
and anchor out there
Behind me is the small harbour of Knidos
It's a very ancient port, we stuck our
nose in there
and had a look-see. It is so so busy
and while we were poking our nose around
we saw
one of the daytripper boats bring up its
anchor and snag somebody else's anchor
chain
That's certainly not a game I like to
play so we've dropped anchor here
outside of
Knidos in a nice sandy bottom but
unfortunately
it's very very rolly so the thing is
we're gonna move on to
Datça which is another two
and a half hours
from here, meanwhile birthday girl Aannsha
is having a swim off the back of the
boat
I can't complain
Well you could but no one would listen
Not on this boat no [Laughs]
All right let's go to Datça - Righto
Cap'n - Cap'n
Woo, see
That's really rolly
Yeah you're feeling the roll down there
Yeah! [Chuckles]
*squeaky boat horn sounds
from our starboard side*
Hey! Wanda!
Here we are in Datça
yeah we just pulled in to the south bay
at Datça
and as we were looking for an
anchoring spot we heard this toodle-toodle
and looked around and there was Ismail
on Wanda. Yeah his boat Wanda, who we
know from Kaş marina
Yeah and actually his story is also
in the book Dream On!
Ah yes ... with our story that Jens
Yes ... wrote
Ten sailors, five continents
one marina in wintertime. Yeah and lots
of interesting stories
Very interesting stories
about people and how they ended up on
their boats
so check that out on amazon.com and...
But that wasn't a sales pitch, it was
more about, we're in Datça and
guess who we've met, a friend and he's
just invited us
over to Wanda, his boat so that we can
have little drinky-poos to say welcome
to Turkey, isn't that cool?
while we wait for Jim. Yeah
So we're gonna have a beer
yeah it's so good
All right we'll catch you guys later
Sorry there's a small problem
with your order
but I think I've fixed it now
Okay, teşekkelur (thanks)
Cheers, Cheers dad
Cheers!
So what have you got there? That the
strawberry one is it? Some sort of
cheesecake
I got the lemon one, Jimness has got the
super-saturated chocolate one
I have yes
Mine has been taken away
[Matt says in background ...the Turkish triangle]
because it wasn't good enough
And yours ... I've got kahve
has gone off!
There's a bit of a Faulty Towers moment:
I'm so sorry there's been a problem
with your order
I have to hit my car with a branch
because it's not good enough
Was that the American episode?
The Americans? Yeah
No, isn't that the Health Inspector? [Laughter]
They think the cat's eaten the rat poison
Oh yes and it's coughing up furballs
And they've got the rat
rat running around - yeah
who belongs to Manuel
eventually he
appears in the biscuits
And he opens the tin and the rat's there and he says, would you care for a rat?
[Happy birthday music over the speakers]
[Singing] Happy birthday to you ...
Hey! Thank you Jim!
