you would not believe the upheaval
needed to replace one small part on a
boat
this is a new victron battery isolator
and it's going to replace the old diode
isolator
that we think has a problem since we had
it looked at by an electrician
in demar red marina
[Music]
this is not a diode battery isolator
this is a phet
battery isolator and its efficiency at
sending power from the alternator to the
various battery banks
is as high as 99.9 percent which is
pretty darn good considering the old
diode battery isolator
has an efficiency of around about 30
so this is going to do wonders in that
department even if it doesn't
fix or find the problem that we may or
may not still have with the
fizzing anodes on the prop shaft i
digress let's get back to this job and
i'll show you a couple of things that
i've been thinking about this is the
current diode battery isolator
and you may remember when we were
attempting to get our 220 volt
sure power battery charger charging the
forward battery which powers the bow
thruster we simply ran
a cable from the 220 volt battery
charger
and with this spade here we connected it
to
this connector here and it seems that
that might have been a completely wrong
move
and buggered up this thing anyway or it
could be that this just died of old age
either way it's getting replaced with a
new one
and we're not going to connect that to
this a little bit later on i'm going to
talk about a temporary solution for
charging the forward bow thruster
battery
and then i'll explain the long-term
solution for keeping that battery
charged from
shore power but let's move on to this
job right now the first thing to do is
find out which one of these connections
runs from the alternator on the engine
and then find out which of the other
three go to
which battery bank and i'm going to
label them
and i'm also going to reconnect them all
one by one
and test that we've got power coming to
the battery when the alternator is
running i'm just gonna do
one at a time so it'll be disconnect
trace the source
label install the new fet battery
isolator and then one by one
install check that it's getting charged
from the alternator and
rinse and repeat until everything is
tested individually
let's get on with it as you can see
there's quite a difference in size in
these two units this is a master vault
and there's literally no marking as to
which is the input and which is the
output on here at least this one tells
us of what everything is input
ground output one two and three so i'm
gonna have to figure out a way to get
this bigger unit
into the same position because that's
where all the leads terminate
that's a new battery isolator in place
it's firmly affixed to the wood
that the old one was screwed to and now
i've just got to find out
which cables go where and also while i'm
doing that i'm going to isolate each
individual battery
and just check its voltage and see what
the voltages are
once we reconnect everything and start
the alternator running so
number three of our wires
comes from the alternator so that's our
input
and of course the input goes over here
and the cable's just that too short to
reach
so what i'm going to have to do is i'm
going to have to turn this whole thing
upside down
my ocd will forever know that the
writing is upside down
to extend the reach of my multimeter so
that i can
reach the batteries and also reach to
the end of these cables
i've got this uh little crocodile clip
set here
with a long length of cable attached to
it
and that will certainly cover the
distances i need
yeah go
and there we have it installed i've
labeled it as well here's the alternator
coming in
this one goes out to the starter this
one goes out to the bow thruster and
this one goes out to the domestic house
batteries
so that in future if we need to work on
it we know exactly what we're working
with
it's been a very sweaty job but apart
from doing a little bit of boat yoga
relatively straightforward so now i'm
quietly confident that when the
alternator is pumping out
its specific amount of amps and i've got
to find out how many amps the
alternator is that the three banks of
batteries will be charged from the
alternator
issue wednesday afternoon the heat of
the day has kind of passed
still bloody warm though isn't it yeah
especially underneath these things
we are wearing these things because we
are in turkey at the moment and
we're just taking our first walk into
cash town
and apparently the rule is if you don't
wear one of these in public
then you will be fined but to be honest
with you
we've been watching people going past on
scooters
and in cars
and so far we're the only ones wearing
them
but you know you've got to suss it out
and
do the right do the right thing i mean
you know i'm
pretty confident i don't have covered i
feel perfectly normal
um but then again we don't know if
anybody else does have kobe so
it's a gamble isn't it really
[Applause]
and it is definitely hot we're in a mess
but you know never thought i'd be able
to dress up like a bunny door or
go into town
[Applause]
[Music]
well town was a bit of a mixed bag i
would say probably
40 percent of people are wearing masks
in the right place yes not just on their
arm
quite busy with traffic um all the usual
places are there and open and
smiley's restaurants expanded a little
bit and we'll show you that when we go
and eat there we
talk to circle and uh she's still doing
her lamb shanks
so we promised that we go into town
and enjoy one of her fabulous lamb
shakes
so yeah just bought a little bit of
shopping mailed
off the this month's postcards to our
ten dollar patrons
yep um
um so yeah watch out in your mailbox for
that coming soon to you
wherever you are in the world and um
time for heading home and making some
din dins yeah
yeah ever since we bought abc about two
and a half years ago
we've never had any
free flow of the chain on the gypsy
because
the brake uh is is stuck basically
and um we did try a couple of things
while we were on the heart in limney in
greece
to try and free up the break and we just
have mike from spicy lady
here in cash marina come over mike's a
long time friend of mine
and he said you're doing it the wrong
way
so he's gone back to his boat to get a
very very large
piece of steel and he reckons he can
free it up with this piece of steel
i reckon he's got a snowball's chance
but let's see
here comes mike mike's got a big one
hasn't he
and it's very stiff in comparison to
mine
all right here we go
wow unbelievable
i'll leave you that unscrew it
and clean it up and clean it up the
whole spline come off as well
yep clean it up unbelievable michael
uh i'm going to see my mate mr hyden mr
idol will make one of them listen i
don't make one
definitely want one of them well
once again thank you very much sir no
problem
my job here is done don't have a beer
well thanks to mike for bringing his
great big stainless steel bar we now
have
a freed up windless break so to carry on
with that job
i'm now about to completely remove the
windlass break from the windlass itself
and clean it up and re-grease it and put
it all back together
again this is a job i've never done i
did have a look
at youtube to see if there any online
videos and all i could come up with
were these huge cargo ships
with these massive windlasses and
obviously much bigger brakes
not really relevant in this situation
but we're going to give it a go anyway
and of course record it for you guys
and if you're enjoying these maintenance
and preventative maintenance segments on
the channel then don't forget to
hit the subscribe button click the bell
icon so that you get notified whenever
we put a brand new episode out
and it really does help us out with
making our channel grow so we appreciate
it thanks
in reality there doesn't seem to be a
lot to it i unscrewed the big metal bit
that goes on here there was a large
plastic disc in here and
there are four bolts that go through
here which i'm assuming hold the actual
chain part of the gypsy onto this piece
here
and just to check i'm actually going to
take the chain off we do have the anchor
attached with a big hook at the moment
so that's not going to go too far
and we'll just easily chain off the
gypsy and
see how mobile this section is
considering this hasn't been taken apart
in service for two and a half years
uh it doesn't look too dirty i'm just
going to clean up a little bit of salt
residue around here on the thread
this seems to be quite well packed with
grease as it is
so we're just going to add some more
grease to this thread
once again as we always do when we're
applying the grease we use a toothbrush
and today we're using anxious toothbrush
again because
mine is still in the plastic wrapping it
came in
and then put it all back together
and then we now have a working
windlass break which means we can if we
want to
free fall the anchor when we get to an
anchorage which
is kind of an important thing because at
the moment we're currently dropping at
the speed that the
windlass will run and in high winds
sometimes it's difficult to get the
anchor down and enough chain down before
the wind grabs out of the bow and we're
off on a little trip
that we didn't intend so it's very
simple mechanism the reason why i'm not
going any further
is because in order to get this side of
the gypsy off
i'd have to undo two bolts down here
which to me
is a bit difficult and i really don't
want to do it so i'm not going to do it
everything seems to be okay here all
right what are you up to today
i'm splicing two ends of rope for two
pieces of rope that are gonna go
on the end of the springs on our stern
lines
so that if the springs break there's a
bit of rope that
holds the boat still to the dock
good idea yeah and i've just done
one here i've already done one it's
already tying the boat
to the other and i've just done this end
i've just done that
and now i've just got to do another eye
we're good to go all right well we'll
show them the finished product when it's
attached
okay so here's what ang has been up to
with the splicing and dicing
on the rope these springs do have the
potential to give way
under heavy loads and if that does
happen then you want
at least some sort of connection from
your line that's attached to the boat
and the chain that is attached to the
key
or the pontoon so that line there that
we've attached
uh does that job there's one on both
sides
and it's just a plan b a backup plan if
you like
just in case it all hits the fan another
job ticked off the list
friday afternoon we've been in the
marina for a week now
and um we're off to the office
to meet amit and sign the contract for a
year
in cash marina in turkey so quite
exciting day
there it is and omits agreed that we can
film the whole process as well
yeah here's our neighbor struggling with
a lot of water
yeah it's very humid at the moment and
very hot
gallons of water being consumed
keeping it potassium actually that's uh
what a nice surprise because i got ice
cream for you
ice cream water no water that's not for
you
where's the beer look at your belly
take an ice cream did you move oh yeah
that's really for you all right okay
can we can we keep them too late because
we're just going to see omit
okay yes
hello we have a meeting at two o'clock
with amit
good to see you to see you hello hello
thank you all right hey
you can use my desk here this is your
contract thank you enjoy your stay in
cash marina thank you very much
welcome back well that's it we're
officially here
yes and although it's a 12 month
contract we actually get 13 months in
total
because uh jim who is our mate on
our bodybuild acheron he introduced us
to marina
and as a consequence we get an extra
free month and he also gets an extra
three months
so that's a pretty good deal so we can
do the same as well so you know if
somebody wanted to come to
cash marina and we introduced them then
we get a month and look at them
yeah so if you're thinking of popping
this way give us a shout first
and we'll make sure you get introduced
yeah
it's a win-win so really now we've just
got a couple of jobs to do on the boat
then the next big thing is timing our
application for
residency oh and while we've got you uh
a couple of people
quite recently have been saying there
are far too many adverts
on the videos and i looked into this at
the back end of youtube
and it seems that youtube basically just
switched everything on
with pre-roll mid-roll and post-roll ads
and just ticked all the boxes so we have
to physically go in there
and untick a few well untick every
single
video you can't do it on a bulk basis oh
really nope so i spent
a good three hours going through every
video and
making sure that we're appropriate
mid-roll ads were removed so you should
see
a great reduction in ads now because
well
you know obviously we've got to earn
some money from youtube somewhere so
there will be
ads because that's our livelihood it is
of course if you want total
ad-free then become a patron and you can
do that from as little as
two dollars and you get to see the video
released
on tuesday instead of saturday and it is
totally ad
free join us next week on sailing abc as
baz installs a dedicated bow thruster
battery charger
scuba dives in the marina and we discuss
our future plans over dinner
so until we see next week stay safe and
healthy
