This is just an update so you all know we have not fell into a hole or anything and our plans for our winter works and sailing (hopefully) i hope you enjoy t...

welcome back to cactus alien I know it's
been a while since we've loaded any
videos we've been busy doing a few bits
around the boat basically some DIY works
and we've been doing some mods on our
autopilot to basically get that working
towards the wind there's another video
on that one on this one I'm just gonna
basically show you a bit of an update
about what we've been doing on the boat
so far over the past couple of weeks
because it's basically been freezing and
winds have been really high as well so
it's not really been very good to get
out we did a bit of sailing try and do
some videos on basically how to do a bit
tacky and a drive in that kind of stuff
so we'll share that in the future as
well but basically our main project for
last couple of weeks has been this
companion way here so about when we
first got the boat a couple years ago
had some water damage on the sides here
and I wanted to kind of sum that Wayne
and dig it out and get it looking back
towards what it should have looked like
when we went when it was new but I was a
bit nervous about taking too much of the
varnish off in case it looks a bit
ridiculous so well I started where this
I took this steps off and I varnished
the steps separately and then I
varnished this as well so basically that
all I did is take the varnish off with a
scraper and then did a bit of sanding to
make it nice and smooth and then
varnished it because all I wanted to do
was make sure that if match it back up
to the sides and I think you know it
doesn't look too bad it needs another
coat and also if you look at the
companionway as well all the steps look
quite nice need some new rubbers here X
these are chipped out but the back still
need to do that because this is
basically the water marking then you'll
see here that was everywhere all over
the sides and everything else so we've
managed to dig all that out the other
thing we did so we spent hours sanding
around these because I didn't want to
dig these out and these are basically
just the wooden in force where the
screws fit but looking in the the back
of the aft cabin as well I found some
little bolts on the back of these so I
think I can take these off and whilst
keeping the screws in there and bolt
them back on on the other side without
damaging those too much and then I can
actually get the sander on those and
something properly so that's why they
don't look particularly too great at
them in it so that's what we've been
doing there I've also fitted a sole
event as well I did did a bit of a
messing about with a sole event I'll
show you that up there
corner there now the original Bank on Oz
was one of these kind here and basically
a solo event is actually slightly
slightly wider than this so I did a bit
of a cutting about of a fan I've trimmed
some of the edges of the edges of the
fan off to basically fit that into the
hole that we've got without putting a
bigger hole in the boat because I didn't
really fancy doing that but it has made
a difference inside it's a lot colder
now this is roughly around four or five
degrees outside and the boat does
actually feel as if it's more ventilated
and obviously it keeps that keeps the
rain out as well so I'm quite happy with
that and what else we doing what the
other thing I want to do is always in
the engine as well if you've been
following this quite a while your net we
have a few things with overheating and
I'll basically explain why I think
that's happening if I just quickly lift
this up on it and show you in there this
here this is the expansion tank for the
Colin and it's pretty much the same
level as the the heat exchanger here so
this is basically where all the the
coolant side of the the water gets mixed
it gets passed by the the raw water so
it cools down through these little tubes
in here now if the engine nice and level
these are pretty much at the same height
they call it slightly higher so you know
it works lovely if we're heeling over
this way and this heat exchanger lifts
up slightly here then the highest point
of the engine is actually in the heat
exchanger so I think what's happening is
the air in here is going into there we
end up with an airlock when we're heeled
over slightly and obviously that's
causing us to overheat so what I want to
do is I want to move this expansion tank
and put it up on the back here so
therefore we can still heal over and
I'll be fine
in the book it does say you can heal
over up to 15 degrees but even at 15
degrees this still ends up being the
highest point of the engine so I just I
don't know if that's something that
anybody else has come across or or
somebody has done a solution for that
before but that's what I think is
happening with it so I'm going to move
that up there and then hopefully that'll
fix that as well but that's the job for
another day as well
so that's that's basically what we've
been doing over the past couple of weeks
and we still keep hoping to go out
sailing even though it is absolutely
freezing but we will find we'll find
some time to come out at some point and
get some more footage both say in free
winter in the lovely UK but catch up
with us again
