In this video, Hauling Out and Going Home - Last Video? Are We Done Cruising?, We haul Balachandra out of the water by travel lift at Green Cove Springs. The Travel lift is small so they ask us to back in and remove the backstay. (not so easy to do in 26 knots of wind!) There is no room for us in the work yard so we are forced to move Balachandra into the long term storage area where we are not permitted live or do work on the boat. We didn't realize that the storage yard closed at 4 pm and is not open on Sundays so we had to make a mad rush to offload our things into the truck and get out before they locked the gate! We set out by truck for Nova Scotia Canada and cross the Canadian border. Months back we made a chance connection with some Canadian engineers in the R&D stages of developing a new type of solar panel for sailors and cruisers and recently we did an interview and they asked us to share their survey with the cruising community to help them understand and communicate with the cruising demograhic. Please scroll down for links to the survey and complete one. In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat. After 2 fridgid Canadian winters in the North Atlantic we untied the lines and headed south to cruise in the Caribbean for another 2 years, exploring as far as Grenada. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos, La Vagabonde, Sailing Uma and Project Atticus, we document the sailing adventures of myself (Dan) and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros, cons, costs, essentials, trials and tribulations of living aboard a sailboat full time. Please SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss out on future videos! this week on sailing bellachandra i have something brand new to announce we're starting a new youtube channel called sailing gear it's a youtube channel dedicated just to talking about new used and forgotten sailing gear to benefit cruisers and sailors alike so you know what works and what doesn't what i'd like you to do right now is go check out the first video and subscribe to my channel you can get there by clicking the link above or follow this address thanks guys in this video we haul bella chandra out of the water for the first time since leaving nova scotia we pack up and leave for canada and we partner up with some engineers developing new marine solar panels last time on sailing bellachandra we encountered a vessel in distress at sea which turned out to be unmanned and adrift we arrived in jacksonville florida and make a creative attempt at clearing the buckman bridge hi if you're new to the channel i'm noelle and i'm dan and we're sailing bella chandra if you haven't subscribed to our channel just go below this video look for the big red subscribe button and press that [Music] button [Music] green cove springs marina asked us to turn the boat and back into the lifting dock and to remove our backstay as the travel lift is not quite large enough for our 44 foot sailboat with a bit of a wiggle and some fine tuning we were finally ready to be hauled out [Music] we were told that there is no more room for new boats in the regular work yard so we were forced to move balachandra into the long-term storage yard boo on the heart and the yard driving home yeah we left the boat on the hard in jacksonville florida for hurricane season in about a week they're going to strap it down like all four corners and keep it nice and secure in case a hurricane was to pass through and we plan to be away for a few months just to reconnect with family and to make some money and to sort of regroup and get everything back in order so we can go down and do some work on the boat and we got a u-haul truck and we filled the whole truck with just our luggage basically so it's almost completely empty but there's this thing about crossing the canadian border right now with kobe 19 that a u.s licensed vehicle can't go across the border but you can take a u-haul or like a limousine or a taxi so um we decided to try that out and if we were to fly home there's like big penalties and everything so we chose to do it this way we put the boat on the heart and green cove springs florida and it was kind of tough for us because we had made all of our arrangements with u-haul and the hotels we stayed on everything to start on a particular day which meant that we had to have the boat completely unpacked and the u-haul packed on a saturday we didn't know it at the time but they're not open on sunday and we thought we had sunday so they came by on saturday afternoon they said yeah we're going to close in like an hour and we're gonna lock this up and you guys can't be on the boat you gotta go and we're not open tomorrow and we didn't realize so suddenly we had to like get everything we could off the boat within like one hour and get it into this u-haul and it was crazy we're like throwing things off the side of the boat picking them up throwing them in the truck it was nasty but we managed to do it we got everything off the boat we checked off everything on our list and we left out moisture control chemicals and stuff inside the boat to keep any mold from forming and we use kitty litter and charcoal and all kinds of stuff so hopefully it'll be good when we get back so we're feeling pretty good about it and eager to see our families and spend some time in canada and make some money so that we can afford to do some of the repairs and changes that we want to do on valachander when we return we definitely want to paint the bottom and we'd like to maybe look into getting a new dodger and bimini we have to change up a lot of our running rigging and everything so i mean it was time to take a break hurricane season's on approaching i mean this is the time to to do that stuff so hopefully in the next few months we'll be able to head back down to jacksonville and get our work done and then get back in the water and go crazy again so [Music] we are at canada customs crossing the border from the united states into canada right now and there's a lot of covid restrictions and paperwork we've had to do to make it back to nova scotia but today we should be driving straight to nova scotia and we'll be doing a two-week self-isolation quarantine in nova scotia canada and uh before we can be released to see our families and everything but we've we've made it back to canada by car here we are and we just crossed the border from the united states into canada we got ourselves a u-haul we threw the stuff in the back and we just crossed the canadian border so it's very legitimate way to travel into canada right now during kobe 19 and all the rules and restrictions right now back to canada we even got tim hortons already it's pretty sweet we haven't been in canada in like two years i mean it's two years cruising in the caribbean and you know it's really amazing to be home but you're seeing all these familiar things like tim hortons and you know some of the towns we've been at before and it's just so nice to be home back in canada even when the border guy said like welcome home it was a really good feeling so we're happy to be home and uh you know we're going to keep making videos we've got lots of footage and lots of things to talk about so that's not going to stop so keep watching and pretty soon we'll be back on the boat and back to sailing again we've partnered with remote energy systems they're a recent startup company of young engineers tackling the energy independence problem for cruisers and sailors you guys said you were local nova scotians were just excited about that there's a lot of new development work like technology work done in canada and even in the maritimes but uh something like a solar panel it definitely like caught our attention because we're like wow there's people back home like developing solar panels that's awesome definitely worth yeah we're a startup company on developing a small scale customer driven focused renewable energy products and our first product is going to be a solar panel made specifically for sailboats so cruisers people that live and travel on their sailboat rely on electrical power they need power and they rely on solar panels and there's other means solar panels are passive silent noise free emissions free vibration free and it's it's better than charging with the with the motor and the engine so we're trying to make a solar panel that fits the use case and has a value proposition that's interesting for sailors what's the difference between um the solar panels that we currently have on our boat compared to the product that you're offering uh basic the panels that you guys have on the boat those work they were designed for and they're best suitable for a terrestrial application we're trying to integrate solar cells within a marine grade fabric right now they're designing a solar panel for sailboats but they're still in the research and development stage and they're looking to connect with liveaboards cruisers and sailors for customer discovery we've included a short three-minute marketing survey that they gave us on the online habits of cruisers and you can access the survey just by clicking this link above or check the show notes below and while taking the survey you're encouraged to share your experiences with solar power on sailboats we spoke with them briefly and we saw the product and we really like what they're doing and i really encourage you guys to check out this survey these guys are creating products that are made for sailors like us that are cruising and need specific items like custom solar panels that are made for sailboats it's a really big deal and i think you guys should check it out and take the survey we're basically helping them create products that helps us i mean it makes sense to me and be sure to check out the show notes in the description below for their facebook page website and survey link if you want to learn more about their potential technology make sure to leave your contact information in the survey thanks for watching please don't forget to leave us a like or a comment below we enjoy reading those and hit that big red subscribe button if you enjoyed what you saw today and if you haven't checked out our patreon page it's always a good time to do so patreon is a place where you can give back if you like what we do and you want to support us thanks bye do you guys have any complaints about the wind generator compared to solar it's noisy we get complaints from our neighbors but we've learned to live with it the noise can yeah if you watch any of our videos where we record on deck and we forget to turn it off it's the loudest thing it's like
