@Sailing Kawai This week we leave the bustling Gocek and sail to Fethiye to shelter from some strong winds that are forecast. It's a great decision as we hold well in mud with 36 knots blowing us around the bay for 2 hours.
3 Must see attractions
1. Lycian Rock Tombs - With the weather clearing we head to town to visit and explore the famous Lycian tombs which are carved into the cliffs overlooking Fethiye. The tombs are extremely large and well maintained and a must see when visiting Fethiye.
2. Kayakoy (abandoned town) - We then hike to the abandoned village of Kayakoy, the 9km hike is hilly and much tougher than expected but well worth it. This once bustling town was home to approximately 13000 people including Anatolian Muslims and Greek Orthodox Christians before a population exchange occurred in the 1920's between Greece and Turkey. It's an eerie place due to it's past and the state of the building but well worth a visit.
3. Fethiye Markets - With an empty fridge we set out early to visit the Fethiye markets. These markets are open every Tuesday and are a must if you need food or are looking to do some shopping. We found the fruit and veg to be fresh and much cheaper than Australia and fill our bags. The Turkish pancakes are famous, so we head to the sit down area and are not disappointed.
Fethiye is a great place to explore with so much history. We loved our time and hope you enjoy the video.
About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the last couple years we have sailed to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia.
Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

last week on kauai we left the large bay
0:02
of marmarus and headed south down the
0:03
turkish coast with consistent winds we
0:06
had some great sailing and were able to
0:08
find a nice anchorage in sand before
0:10
reaching our destination of gochek a
0:12
boating haven and where we said farewell
0:14
to our friends this week we take refuge
0:17
in federia as we shelter from strong
0:19
winds before exploring the famous lucian
0:21
rock tombs which are carved into the
0:23
mountains overlooking fedia we are
0:25
treated to some turkish pancakes while
0:27
we wander through the ever-so-cheap
0:29
vetia markets where we have an unlimited
0:31
variety of fresh fruit and veg to choose
0:33
from before hiking to kaiakoi the
0:35
abandoned village which was once home to
0:37
thirteen thousand people before a
0:39
population exchange it's a gloomy old
0:42
day here today first time we've had
0:43
since we arrived in turkey we're on our
0:46
way to federia
0:48
a bit later than we would have liked
0:50
because
0:51
i had to wait at the
0:52
waste
0:53
removal dock for about 40 minutes 50
0:57
mins
0:59
and we had to get it done because today
1:01
was our 15th day so
1:04
and uh
1:05
yeah the winds are set to get to 40
1:08
knots this afternoon that's why we're
1:10
heading to federia it's a nice protected
1:13
bay
1:14
fedia is a short 10 nautical mile trip
1:16
south of gochek and as you cruise
1:18
towards the town the large mountains are
1:20
striking
1:21
resorts line the foreshore as you enter
1:23
the bay before you reach the anchorages
1:26
which are a little industrial and a
1:27
little untidy in comparison it wasn't
1:30
long until the bad weather arrived and
1:32
we found a spot and anchored in mud 12
1:34
metres deep
2:10
yeah she just hit 36 knots
2:15
that's meant to be the max
2:19
the prediction is always what happens
2:21
but uh yeah
2:23
the max
2:25
there's a few boats you've been
2:26
struggling to anchor they're out
2:29
this direction either is it
2:31
no it's meant to be blowing
2:33
the west it's coming from the east but
2:35
there's so many big mountains we've been
2:37
here for a couple hours we've held firm
2:39
so that gives you a little bit of
2:41
confidence we use a variety of apps that
2:43
help us navigate and monitor the weather
2:45
for wind and storms we use windy we find
2:48
the wind gusts are usually a general
2:50
reflection of the wind speed for
2:52
anchorages navally is our go-to and it's
2:54
been a game changer for us there are so
2:56
many reviews and shared inputs which
2:58
give you peace of mind when heading into
3:00
an anchorage you just click on the
3:02
anchor symbol and it provides so much
3:04
information including shelter and
3:06
protection based on the wind and swell
3:08
reviews seabed type and photos
3:11
we still use navionics for navigation
3:14
and anchoring and just a key bit of
3:16
information if you are looking to head
3:18
to fedia we know of a few people who
3:20
have anchored just outside the
3:22
designated anchorage areas which are
3:24
marked green on navionics and as they
3:26
were leaving turkey they received a fine
3:29
after the weather cleared our plan was
3:31
to explore the tombs that overlooked the
3:33
bay
3:35
to explore fedia we found it a little
3:36
difficult to find a place to leave our
3:38
tender so we tied it up to a jetty off
3:41
one of the restaurants
3:43
fedia like most tourist towns in turkey
3:45
have gullets that line the foreshore as
3:47
you wander through the streets towards
3:49
the tombs the more authentic it feels
4:04
about 200 meters before the tombs are
4:06
the ruins of federer castle which has a
4:08
great view over the bay
4:12
cruising through what feels like the
4:14
back streets yeah
4:16
looks like some of the ancient tombs
4:17
just here yeah
4:30
what do you know about these
4:33
very little
4:36
i was hoping
4:38
i was hoping to
4:40
find some information now i think there
4:42
is some stuff down here
4:50
[Music]
4:57
the tombs which are carved into the
4:58
mountain are the lysian rock tombs built
5:01
from the 4th century the lysians
5:02
believed the dead were carried to the
5:04
afterlife by winged creatures therefore
5:07
placed the honored dead in high places
5:09
such as cliffsides
5:11
the tomb of a mintus is the largest and
5:13
can be viewed for 20 turkish lira it has
5:16
magical views over fetish
5:19
[Music]
5:30
hiking is a great way to get to know an
5:32
area and get some exercise so we thought
5:35
it would be a good idea to hike to
5:36
kaiakoi 9 kilometers to the abandoned
5:39
city a unesco world friendship and peace
5:41
village
5:42
the moment trace goes through a
5:45
it's like a rose bush
5:52
all right now
5:54
we had some wisdom earlier in the trip
5:57
we're climbing up the mountain and past
6:00
some old ruins and there was a homeless
6:02
man in some of the ruins and
6:05
i heard him say something about dying
6:07
and you said that
6:09
he asked where we were going and you
6:10
said
6:12
he said you've left it too late you're
6:14
going to die
6:16
yeah and
6:18
we laughed we laughed that off
6:20
and we're not dying you only told me a
6:22
couple minutes ago we're taking these
6:24
little shortcuts which seem to be long
6:26
top way longer
6:28
but it's funny
6:29
more exciting and fun
6:31
all right we better keep going
6:41
definitely adventurous i'll say that
6:46
got a rock climbing badge yeah
6:49
i think we might stick to the road from
6:50
now on oh
6:53
quite fun
6:55
it was
6:59
oh
7:00
god
7:03
let's see how much it'll cut off
7:09
did we not learn
7:16
[Music]
7:22
we're going down
7:25
yo
7:26
yo all right well we can see our
7:28
destination so in the
7:30
far mountain over there
7:32
there is
7:33
i i may pronounce this wrong cocoy
7:37
um the quick vicey
7:41
the quicker i
7:42
say well i thought that was the case
7:45
until you said that
7:47
that is the importance just the way you
7:49
said it i'm not sure how to pronounce it
7:50
because just so i use it end and town
7:55
way over there
7:57
and i'll go into the details of that a
7:59
little bit later
8:00
we've reached where
8:04
people can see it
8:07
you can have a crack if you like
8:10
caraca
8:18
so we're going with we're interpreting
8:20
this sign
8:23
151 people
8:26
don't worry about the people but give
8:28
way
8:31
is that how you would interpret it yep
8:34
i don't know
8:35
how turkish people would interpret that
8:37
but
8:38
figure that out google translate and
8:40
have a little geez later yeah and if
8:42
we're wrong we'll put it up sorry about
8:44
it
8:46
you ready to push the button
8:50
we're not there yet continue on we'll
8:52
see you later button
8:55
we'll find you the once bustling town
8:57
keakoi also previously known as levisi
9:00
was home to approximately 13 000 people
9:03
including anatolian muslims and greek
9:05
orthodox christians
9:07
greek and turkish people lived side by
9:09
side in the town until the 1920s when it
9:12
was forcefully abandoned during a
9:13
population exchange in which muslims and
9:16
christians were exchanged between greece
9:18
and turkey this led lubici to become
9:20
kekoi where more than 6 000 christians
9:23
suddenly left and were deported from
9:24
fetia harbour some say the village
9:27
remained empty because of its remoteness
9:29
with an earthquake destroying the
9:30
village in the 50s
9:32
wandering through this peaceful place on
9:34
a sunny day it was hard to imagine what
9:36
had taken place here
9:38
just wandering up
9:40
around the mountain
9:41
through the little uh
9:43
remains of the houses and churches
9:46
and anyway come have a look inside
9:50
[Music]
10:06
looks like the uh
10:08
toilet just air jace if you need to go
10:10
where's that
10:11
just here
10:12
yeah
10:13
yeah
10:15
oh
10:16
little
10:23
[Laughter]
10:23
[Music]
10:30
a little bit creepy in uh amongst these
10:33
old abandoned houses and churches but um
10:36
it's actually quite pleasant as well
10:38
it's a nice day and
10:40
sorts of uh nature growing up through
10:43
the old ruins and
10:45
yeah it's quite pleasant as well as
10:47
being slightly creepy
10:49
i had a uh butterfly land in my head
10:51
just before which was kind of cool oh
10:54
nice i didn't see that
10:57
wandering around the buildings by myself
11:00
can you say hello good one yeah no it's
11:03
pretty overgrown
11:10
but with that thought in my mind it is
11:12
slightly creepy around here yeah i think
11:14
nighttime might be a little bit creepy
11:16
oh yes
11:18
anyway there is a storm brewing over the
11:20
mountain so we uh probably should
11:23
hit that taxi button all right let's do
11:25
it
11:39
there's always song problems
11:43
yeah
11:44
maybe
11:45
they're not quite large enough but we've
11:46
got a big day today not really where are
11:49
we going we've got a 10 minute walk to
11:51
go uh we're going to the market
11:53
hopefully
11:54
oh there's some pretty
11:56
nice board shorts right there for me
11:59
come on so these ones
12:01
oh yeah oh orange they're popular around
12:04
here
12:07
seems to be a pretty popular thing to do
12:09
here on a tuesday yup is it the only day
12:12
they're open the market
12:13
i believe so just a tuesday yep
12:18
make youtube yes
12:34
oh my god it's amazing you wouldn't shop
12:36
anywhere else
12:51
so cheap how much is that per kilo
12:55
it's about
12:56
25 cents
12:58
per kilo
12:59
crazy and how much are lettuces when we
13:02
left home i saw some lettuce selling pie
13:04
i think the worst was like ten dollars
13:07
which is horrible and let's see what
13:08
we've got here
13:15
we will come back thank you
13:17
50 cents
13:20
[Music]
13:36
hmm
13:39
[Music]
13:49
[Music]
14:06
so
14:08
[Music]
14:28
a little bit hungry yeah
14:31
the complimentary olives uh tomato and
14:34
cucumber
14:35
where uh i've ordered a pancake
14:38
and you have ordered a juice yeah what
14:40
type of pancake and what type of juice
14:42
are we getting i've got a minced
14:45
uh mince and cheese with onion and
14:48
parsley and you have watermelon
14:51
and we're sharing a little bit we're
14:52
sharing it all yes and we're in federia
14:54
in the markets
14:55
just spoke to the ladies making my uh
14:58
pancakes yeah i saw you that's so
15:00
experienced
15:03
so yeah now it's been a
15:05
really good day and the markets here are
15:08
so big
15:09
and
15:10
cheap
15:11
and fresh
15:12
and everything everyone's like positive
15:14
and happy
15:16
it's good
15:17
yeah pretty amazing
15:19
turkey continues to delight
15:32
i don't even need to taste it to know
15:33
it's going to taste good
15:36
why don't you look this happy when i
15:37
dish out my meals
15:38
i like your meal but this is just
15:40
different
15:43
nice
15:45
next week we are super excited to take
15:47
you to the magical butterfly valley
15:49
surrounded by impressively high and
15:51
steep cliff faces it is only accessible
15:53
by boat
15:54
i was too mesmerized by the unbelievably
15:56
clear yet bright blue turquoise water to
15:59
leave the boat and stayed to see the
16:01
many fish and turtles in the bay and
16:03
enjoy swimming and snorkeling jace
16:04
ventured into the valley to enjoy nature
16:06
from the land and manage to find the
16:08
elusive butterfly subscribe and hit the
16:11
notification bell for this next one and
16:13
to see more of europe as we continue to
16:15
sail turkey and greece and beyond
16:25
you
