With our Wind Generator faulting through the night we stashed our plans for the day and set to servicing the little dear. 'Breezy' is one of our main power generators so we needed her going – and fast. Darren gives you detailed coverage on how to service your Wind Gen and get back on track within a day. We then head to Airlie Beach to check out the annual Reef Festival. Yeah!

We are an adventurous couple who live an alternative life - a life at sea. We feel better connected when we are sailing. We live simpler and have less impact on the environment. We take the time to immerse ourselves in different cultures, meet amazing people and experience what the oceans and our planet have to offer.
So come aboard and follow our adventures as we sail and explore our beautiful planet!

in our last episode we check out
Darren's ad we test our skills and
Stickle win then enjoy a glorious sail
from Stonehaven anchorage through two
unsafe places where Darrin checked out
his new spear gun
any load I cannae later so next time
you're sitting out with a bunch of
cruisers discussing your whingeing woes
and someone says you oh hey no worries
they're just you just need to service
your whingeing and replace your brushes
and you think to yourself you know cool
I can do that how do I do that never
thought of when did Hannity brushes then
you think to yourself oh my god I'm
going to have to get someone in dollar
signs and all sorts of things like that
crossed your mind well it doesn't have
to it can be really easy and dad's going
to show you how today we're installing
two new solar panels but as you can see
with since then had another job that's
popped up the wind generator decide or
some going to work in the middle of the
night we've we've sort of known about
this problem that it's happened before
where these not sure whether you can see
the the brushes here it's actually it's
actually been arcing it it just rubs a
couple against a couple of slip rings
inside that housing there and you can
see the difference between the two and
once that starts arcing what makes it
really bad contact and therefore it
won't charge so it happened once before
and we managed to clean the the brushes
up and we put it back together so we
knew it was going to happen again so now
we have a couple of
a couple of year brushes to put in there
and you can see the visual difference
here how much cleaner they are so we're
just going to stick those in and maybe
stick some a little bit of grease into
it in a couple of places and and give it
a birthday this thing's been swinging
around up there for nine years now and
if you know live-aboard application so
the service of this thing's been really
really good this we're going to replace
the blades as well you can you can
probably see that that's a little bit of
fishing rod damage where where I'll poke
the fishing rod through and that just
slowly blends that are getting bigger
and bigger so we figure the end is going
to fly off flat and I have heard of them
you know when they break applied they
put themselves out of balance that much
that they'll literally fly off the post
and when that happens they break all the
other blades in the process so we're
going to give it a big birthday and work
I said it you glides on hopefully you
know she'll go again for another 10 or
15 years so if you're changing these
brushes that they're really easy to do
and if you're really not sure about
something just take a photo with your
phone you know just say you've got
something to refer back to but you know
they literally just unscrew from the
side there and like poke around on those
spring-loaded and they just
I just sit in that they sit in that
groove there and they sit on that spring
and they literally they push out and
they fix it on this you know whether you
can see but they sit on that slip ring
there and that's what makes the contact
them our brushes are quite salvageable
we could make them work again but since
we've got the new ones we'll replace it
but you can see that that's that ring in
the bottom we is quite worn it
originally was on the top one we've
swapped it out because it's just an
earth and it's actually not hooked up to
anything so we shot that around to give
it a new lease of life and you can just
clean that up with a little bit of light
Emery and pops your uncle
where you go again you can kind of see
that that's it's virtually like
brand-new there but as as you come
around you can see where that the
working radius has been just in there
and that's that brush has done that
damage there where it's been arcing you
know it's it's gotten dirty and it's
trying to work like a welder yeah and
that's it's damage that slippering a
little bit but so you're just cleaning
that up with emery paper are you
yeah it's virtually just a bit of wet
and dry or anything similar whatever you
got on board
you know the finer the better this this
stuff's only brass on it that damage is
quite easy it cleans up really easy but
it's done you know with a bit of mucking
around you get that smooth again you
could get that smooth or you know close
to it
it's pretty close
said butcher well done my honey so why
take another look
well I want to take again that so the
swivel place head of it this this place
and some just to grease up earrings also
the bearings are in there yeah you can
actually see the bearing just in me okay
ideally it'd be good if we had new
bearings but we don't sigh
they all got that piece out there now
and the bearings a feels a cage but you
can it's just a little dust cover in
there and you can flick that out and
just repack it full of grease and
because it doesn't really work that hard
it's just swings with a generator so
just put a little bit of grease in there
should be right for another ten years
okay
rock on
it's little dust cover now I'm going to
just stick a little bit of winch Cory so
any are gracing Magister outfit a bit
Amir the grace goes in there you can say
the little balls all bearings in there
yup yeah we just cover them all in grief
and smear gireesham
okay how long to do you I'll tell you
well I'm well I'm not the business end
of it me out yeah there's nothing like
that anyway
well that's what generates all appear
let's just all full of magnets and I
forget what you call all that stuff in
there but it'll come to me so now I can
just these two bearings in here side
both sides I really just want to be able
to pop them in if I can
okay I've got these bearings sort of
that this one's actually got two metal
seals and so I can't actually do much
with that but the this one here has just
got a nice little rubber seal and you
can just pop that out it's the grease
goes a little bit hard after a while of
bearing still feels fine but I can
probably get a little bit of another
grease and I'll just don't worry pack
that yeah and put him back in and
hopefully it'll help keep him running
for a while it's a bit of a shame I
can't do it to that one because he's got
a metal ceiling and I've probably
destroyed if I pop him in
you know that will have pressure on them
okay well if you don't have to take
apart your mouth and give it a good old
work over yeah just pop the mic
up look for another ten years
yeah so this puts the bit that actually
generates the power all the magnets and
stuff in it for the wind gin so what
when the the blades are spinning that
way and turning that magnet thing there
is a magnet isn't it this is quarter
quarter strong no I get it hahahaha
and that's how strong the magnets on any
right that's the power generation but in
your district icing that's freezing out
the bearings on the inside that was a
mistake
then she doing were you up to hello
honey
well I'm just trying to put the new
brushes in let's just try them on for
size and we've actually got to fit in
into the little gap there they're
actually a little bit big that's the old
one there and I haven't got the spring
in it but it's supposed to be able to
fit down slop the spring pushes it out
on the slip ring like that so
yeah it looks like I'll have to get the
Emory Emory type Brad again and because
they that brush is actually quite soft
so with a little bit of emery paper and
just will give it a little bit of a
touch-up and it'll sit in there Bob's
your uncle okay we're just about ready
to close this miss Jennie up we've
cleaned up the slip rings are the best
weekend maybe another couple of hours on
the embryo could have got them probably
near perfect but they'll be okay for
another half a dozen use the brushes are
in behind there you can't really see
them but there's really not much to
these air breeze wind generators so the
really good quality of an average blow
could fix this quite easily but they're
really the only moving parts in it of
the slip rings and brushes and all this
circuitry here you can actually buy on
the net so if that's the problem just
rot away and put a new one in and away
you go again say either a really good
thing and simple enough so for the sake
of 30 dollars for a set of brushes and
the afternoon well hopefully we'll be
making making a bit of pair again by
this afternoon
good idea honey so what do you do just
place it all up there yeah basically it
just
it's got a nice little layering on there
and three screws in there put the prop
back on top your uncle
[Music]
high-five my honey
[Music]
so these are the Airlie Beach Market
Square where you come to get our veggies
we read a really good cup of fresh
veggies here
and we really do surprises they're
locally grown so here we take you for a
bit of a tour right on the beach and
elevates really nicely
[Music]
ah ha ha ha
[Music]
[Music]
they yell epistemology little mmm
[Music]
people ask me lately about the pet
really good cruising hats in straw hats
and I particularly like the cowboy style
I stay on your head you can flex an arm
if you want to you can have them up like
cowboy style and
the other any cool thing so cruises
these actually come with others
Sail ahead of the wind computing around
and dinging so yeah this is the place to
come here cowboy hat so if you're not
baking your own bed on board this is the
place to come and look at these
delicious loaves of bread
you've got Sardo screen roll for cheer
barter they're all baked locally and
they are really lovely and fresh the
reef festival was on and we'd heard
there were fireworks on that night so we
share that selves from lunch at the
gorgeous treehouse cafe then went to
check out the classic car show beautiful
let's be my choice
I practically old station wagon then we
went to check out the shuffle some local
cruisers that we've met they design and
print their own t-shirts and so locally
crafted gift so it was a pretty fun
store to hunt around so it's definitely
my kind of t-shirt haha
Wow fantastic might have been
pretty nice thank you
and cover that with this perfect so with
nighttime looming we took off to find
some fun and frivolity at the festival
the Reef Festival is an annual event
promoting awareness of the Great Barrier
Reef and living in the Whitsunday we had
a pretty cool time checking out the show
ride we grabbed a gourmet burger and set
back on a beach to watch the fire so hi
everyone thanks for watching
we are pretty stoked because I know it's
a small amount but we have cracked the
two thousand followers barrier on
YouTube and we just want to say thank
you so much for two people who spend a
lot of their time alone just hanging out
doing their own stuff it's really nice
to know that we have a growing slider
family out there really nice bunch of
people seem to start have started
following us and that's you guys and
thank you so much we love hearing from
you and we're really enjoying the
questions and the comments that we're
getting from you so thank you for the
mugs and thank you for sharing and thank
you for the connection so one fellow has
asked us a really good question and
that's James Franklin and he asked
asked us to tell some things that we've
learned over our time cruising that we
haven't learned in books so Darren has a
particularly good story on that one he's
going to share with you yeah I must say
that was a really interesting question I
thought well you know this there's so
many things that you you can't actually
hear reading books that that are related
to cruising and and especially yeah more
on the problem sort of things where
things to go wrong and and there's not a
long as there's not there's nothing you
can refer back to and especially when
you're new at it you know you're trying
to get all the information Canon and you
know when I first started as one of us
probably one of the first things that
ever happened to me um the particular
vessel I had at the time of sailing
along in the backstay break and Campari
it went off like a gunshot and course
you know what I said next and and what a
bloody hell what do I do
it's like what did you do well I turned
the boat around into the wind and you
know sails flapping around everywhere
and that was probably the worst thing
that I could have done because with with
the backstay break and you know the mast
wanted to go forward and it kink the
Furler and I couldn't I couldn't I
couldn't feel the further up and it was
just a little chain of events or I was
just really lucky that the day was a
really nice day and I did manage to
bluff my way through it but if I had to
just pull the mainsheet on as hard as I
could I could have kept silent and
basically fill the filler up and you
know would have been a much more
controlled event but
yeah it was it was a okay it was a
pretty interesting you know for over ten
minutes that it could have really ended
up bad
no one needs a mouth on deck or in the
water I haven't had that happen to me I
haven't had a back stay go and yeah I'm
not sure now I know at least I've got
someone who's had that experience you
know I've missed the thing you just you
know never know what's going to happen
and things just occur out of the blue
sometimes and so yeah backstage goes
mainsheet on there are a lot of chain of
events that can be similar like but some
better than others but yeah it was a
pretty good question like yeah good
question James thanks very much for
asking so yeah please keep up with your
questions we're really enjoying sharing
our little stories and and figuring out
what it is that you would like to know
about so love to hear from you share
with your friends and thank you again so
much for watching cheerio okay so he
goes
[Music]
