welcome back to SB basic ok before we
get working let's take a look at this
got a little treat on the lake
the Goosebumps race they do this every
Sunday throughout the winter
and it looks like about a hundred boats
on the lake today tons of fun while
they're out there playing I'm getting to
work and why are we working back down in
the scoops I guess start getting glass
cloth laid over all the work I've been
doing and jump into the other hole as
well that scoop is falling behind and I
got a ton to do in there so I need to
get caught up quick because steering is
coming fast
so let's get to work
I mean it's looking real good down here
Foxy's cured come down here just kind of
handsome do a little detail sanding you
get some glass cloth down that's my goal
for this side today
get some glass laid up on the other side
as well so let's get into working this
over a little bit knocking off just any
of these little ridges here's what I'm
talking about
actually this feels really good but see
like this little bit right here just a
little bit of edge on this nothing much
but when I'm laying glass cloth it may
snag on it you would never see that
under the cloth but I want the class
cloth to go down smooth and just hand
sand like there's a little burr
right here on the corner just want to
knock all these down that way when I get
my cloth on here just when I'm tugging
and pulling
I'm not messing up the fibers so let's
just work this over

okay I just spent the better part of an
hour and a half sanding out this
bulkhead and let me show you what I did
everything is looking great
I'm feeling real good about all the new
structure this is all just turning out
nice all the transitions just planed out
perfectly flat it's this old bulkhead
that has been fighting me and I have
been spending time as you've seen
smoothing it out it's getting real close
I've got a couple little pocket marks
left those don't really bother me
because in a glass cloth and it probably
flowed over that nicely but they do
bother me the big part is these inside
corners they are still a little jagged
and the radius isn't a nice one-inch
sweep I want that one inch sweep so if I
put my cloth on I can tab it smoothly
into the hole not the sharp corner here
so I'm gonna spend a couple hours right
now fixing this right I'm not gonna bore
you with it I'll do it off camera and
revisit it tomorrow morning right before
we put down this cloth I'll show you
what I did how I did it and then we'll
get this bulkhead all covered up
and just like that I finished my epoxy
work on this side for today
I'll show that to you in the morning now
it's run over here this other scoop is
quite a bit behind this scoop let me get
you up to speed over here
[Music]
okay take a look at this side here's all
the structure I've built for the
staircase going up
nothing has glass cloth on the inside of
this yet I need to put two and three
layers on this overlapping all the seams
hanging upside down all the way through
here that is number one then I need to
filled this out look at the other side
and this side is much rougher this
bulkhead
I've already started sanding getting the
big burrs off looks like they had
patched in something at one point right
here it was just heavy claw through here
will smooth all that out let's look at
this here's the Fox Bhima here which is
the only wood component on the boat when
I ripped this deck out actually damaged
this a little so I need to repair this
make sure this is all covered in epoxy
before I cover this up so I can start
working on that first that I need to
extend this deck out like I do the other
side and then build this wall but look
at this this is all original boat look
at how old and nasty this looks I'm
gonna sand all this out make it look
smooth and I don't even know what this
gap is back here that needs to be filled
there's a hole right here who knows what
that was for probably an electrical lead
I'll fill that
so quite a bit to do in this side to
smooth things out it's all doable just a
lot of work but it needs to happen so
I'm gonna get started on this side and
start bouncing more back and forth on
that side to this side the other side
it's almost done so the detail work
takes time to dry I'll be working over
here so the order of events in here
I'm gonna work in this compartment first
because this needs to be sealed off
because when I lay glass cloth I could
be laying much off here as well starting
to do all these fill look at this I
don't know if this holes are holes here
this gap here this hole here this repair
look at this looks like there was a hole
here in this at one point and they just
poured resin in it and they resin
expanded as it hardened and pushed out
the bottom of the hole that needs to
come out so fine a bit of prep needs to
happen before I strike close it up this
compartment so let's get started on some
of this right now
pour this whole out get some cleaned
wood
[Music]
that should do it
okay just like that would you get in
late so that's when I get my boxing done
so cures overnight and I get a fresh
start tomorrow morning so we're on the
porthole now let's get some epoxy rollin
oh okay when I'm filling a hole like
this this is a one inch hole I'm not
just gonna jam epoxy interested because
it's just gonna run down the inside of
this so I like to do is cut a little
plug there's a little foam plug we're
gonna push it back just to the far side
here there we go that way when I fill
this the epoxies not pouring out the
other side
[Music]
there we go this is the neck sorry I
want to hit want to make sure this is
nice and sealed and a flat surface is
always nice to work out
this is going on probably about a maybe
an eighth inch at the most on here I'm
just trying to keep it nice and thin so
I don't like to just pack this in there
this is West system with a tool fie
partner which is a fast gear hardener
and then the clinal silica filler
[Music]
readygo his house why not use the
squeeze bag method and I have used it
works great but epoxy is expensive and
when you use the squeeze bag method well
at least what I do weighs probably 10%
of the epoxy hitting it into the bag and
sticking to the bag this way I can use
most of my epoxy it's probably takes a
little longer but I feel it's more
efficient use of the epoxy just my
opinion
[Music]
[Music]
okay I just finished putting my epoxy in
I've got the two patches in that I
wanted to do and I finished all the
inside radius work up here I always mix
up a little bit more epoxy than I need
that way I could go around and kind of
fill little holes little divots and
dings I've got it going all around me
little pieces just kind of look around
and look at the worst spots and just
keep filling them in that way by the
time I finish my project over here a lot
of stuffs happening behind me as well
the trick is getting out of here now
without bumping too much in this epoxy
okay I've done four in here today let's
let this fire off and we'll start all
again tomorrow

[Music]
boy
just a peaceful morning
you got a lot of days like this in
Seattle
was calm clear skies this means it was a
little cool I think what I'll do is end
up throwing a little heater in here for
the next two or three hours all these
decks are drying off make sure that
epoxy is nice and cure so I'm gonna get
that sanded up and my glass cloth late
on today
can't complain though it is beautiful
it's the next morning actually it's the
next afternoon
I spent a couple hours yesterday putting
in the epoxy I put my nut one inch
radius all the way around this I feel
much better about that I've filled in
the last bit of parking this on this
bulkhead swept it over this tab and then
spent a couple hours this morning
sanding it's ready I finally feel good
about this so here's what we're gonna do
we're gonna lay one continuous sheet
it's gonna start on the deck come up
over my new lip and down over this and
this will tie in all these different
seams if I don't do that this could
potentially crack out over time but by
layering glass over it
that will just tie it all together this
will continue down wrap around here and
then follow the whole line all the way
around
I want to bend this over my new radius
because I don't want this to ever crack
out and I'll tab it about an inch and a
half onto the hole all the way around
this is a big piece of glass to put in
well it's not a big piece to put in but
the situation and crammed in this little
room it's a big piece let's get this in
well let's try to get this in without
making too much of a mess I just got a
quick measurement off that I need a 52
inch piece of cloth here pick this up
the other day and here's the cut
they came from the supply house look at
this just a lot of loose strings and
what I like to do get my garbage can
here I like to pull strings and square
this up that gives me a nice starting
point because who knows how square this
is right now there we go so I pulled a
few extra strings in the side see these
fibers sticking out look further than
this came across here so now I'll just
trim this off nice and square and it
gives me a good starting point
okay think that's got everything
there's my epoxy I'm anticipating this
to be about four pumps of epoxy using
wet system but I've only mixed up about
six pumps I'm gonna mix this up in two
different batches it'll extend my
working time get everything all lined up
in here it's pretty poor so I can't be
crawling in and out and then here's the
cloth this is a 10 ounce cloth that I
just pre-cut I think I have everything I
need so let's get in here and try to
leave this in I'm gonna start at the top
and then work my way down I'm gonna get
a nice layer of epoxy down first just a
thin layer just enough to tack the cloth
to the project here
this is tight
okay there we go nice even layer not to
tack the clock down let's get that on
next then I'll start layering more epoxy
on to get the cloth saturated of course
this is the tricky part now that I have
this wall of epoxy giving this cloth
started
[Music]
my goal is to make sure that all of my
radius work has a nice
rap on it
and it's laying down not too bad so far
I've got a lot of extra cloth on here
it's pretty hard to pre-cut a piece like
this so I'll just drape it in here just
trim it before I stick it down when
you're laying cloth in a obscure area
like this you'll have to do a couple
relief cuts to get things to fold around
properly just kind of nibble them in
once good to lay down somewhat start
just roll a little little more out kind
of helps you mix this cloth bend a
little better sticks down a little
better at points it almost seems like
it's impossible than mostly only down
but you just keep working it you know by
thinning out and putting a thin layer of
epoxy down it just increases your
working time when it's sitting in your
bowl it'll fire off quite a bit faster
so by getting the material down it helps
you out my dad's been in the sugar scoop
for a while and I've been hanging out
outside singing if he needs me so I'm
gonna go check on him it's a beautiful
day hey what you doing lay down some
cloth all right are you kidding not
boring it's taking a while but it's get
there okay that's great what are you
gonna do after this um I think this is
the last project for today okay so after
this we can relax a little bit
okay I should be done here I don't know
maybe half hour 45 minutes okay
then I'll see you in a bit
hanging to leave them alone for a little
while and I'm gonna go do my own thing
how about I don't know 20 minutes into
this now working tabs pretty long even
though I'm using a 205 partner it's it's
not real hot out so I should have about
I don't know maybe 45 minutes of working
time especially that I'm using this in
smaller batches just a matter just keep
working this see you've got this side
all worked in all day up here I'd make a
few relief cuts down here always adds a
different element because you get these
strings on here
but I'll just keep working it and
eventually all lay down okay that was a
lot to do down in there but we got it
losing light fast Sun just dipped down
behind Queen Anne there so I got dark
real quick in there well see Rose down
the piece is all the way on it stabbed
into the walls all the way around
everywhere I had to make a relief cut I
patched in a little more cloth over it
on all the corners so my next step is
let this fire off for about two or three
hours I want it to stiffen up a little
bit and then I'm gonna come in and trim
this tonight I'll show you how all that
looks tomorrow morning so it's leaked
and I'm exhausted teal is still out in
the sugar scoops trying to finish up a
little epoxy so we are going to see if
we can coax him into having dinner and
calling it a day
gosh it's so dark out
see what he's doing in here hey are you
almost done ten minutes you know that
dinner's ready
okay I'll be right out okay I'm just
done yeah just trim it up I it's just to
the point where I could trim the glass
and I'll peel it and at the end I mean
it's cold and dark out here oh no wait
for summer it's coming six months hey
can I do it okay I'm almost done
rain pretty good last night
but let's dry off that scoop get inside
and see how that a glass turned out
because I'm probably entire to be
crawling in and out of here
believe me I'm getting tired of me
crawling in and out of here okay
everything's fired off last night I came
here and trim this off an inch and a
half off of the wall
remember this was a jagged just wild
seam all I do is wait for that sweet
spot when the epoxy is just starting to
fire off I could take my razor and I
just score it just lightly come around
here I take a grab the semi cured cloth
and just peel it off here's my bag of
the stuff right here it's all fired off
it looks nice and clean now
look how this came around just all trim
nice and clean everything laid down real
flat no bubbles no wrinkles I feel good
about this all this is tied into now
it's just a matter of hand sanding this
out then running an orbital on the face
and I'm ready for fairing and paint
