there you go
here just my
one of guys welcome back to SP basic I'm
alive barely
so Kela Emma are still recovering from
the flu which took them out for about a
week maybe we could have almost no fun
let me tell you we gotta get better I'm
almost there anyways this is kind of new
to us just because I'm now here and at
the office so I like to get an idea of
what needs to be done and now I get to
help a lot more than I have been in the
past and this will help teal get on with
the boat projects well I keep me focused
in her own way no but I get to do all
the things that I kind know it's a push
to the side that we really need to get
done so I like this idea don't get me
wrong because now that she's here
this is kind of our time in the morning
for Emmet Emma's up
I hear her Stern down in her stateroom
she strikes I mean she's readin we let
her do her thing for a little bit we
have a cup of coffee and we get a game
plan and this is something we're gonna
do every day from here on out it was
plan out our day that way I'm not just
running in in five different directions
and we could work a little more
efficiently there's a lot of factors
though that play into this weather's
huge factor for us right now and so it's
hard for us to plan I'm gonna be
glassing this week I mean this week it's
been snowing and miserable and rain and
wind but today we may get a break for a
little bit so but I'm still feeling
lousy I don't know we're gonna sit down
talk this out and get a good game plan
for today
well since I'm not feeling too good I'm
gonna try to knock off an item or two
off the board here that are easy indoor
items and this is one that's been
bugging me right here and you know what
now that I think about it I don't gripe
much I don't complain much but I have a
little grievance with West marine right
now let me tell you about it
I bought these VHF a little handheld
waterproof VHS great little units I
fired him off when I first bought him
perfect loved him but I bought him
premature bottom a few years ago and put
them in storage thinking you know what
when we need him we need him I bought
two of these because they had such a
sale on the price was just amazing I
said that's a great price let's buy to
throw a storage well I pulled them out
the other day put a charge on them pull
them off the charger nothing both are
dead batteries are gummed so I call West
marine let's crack one of these open
let's look at these suckers the battery
little lithium-ion battery right here
look at this even has a West Marine part
number on it to reorder a new battery I
think that's great
I'll call West Marine order a couple
batteries call west brain they don't
stock those batteries and that's my
grievance if they're gonna sell an item
like this that you know that a battery's
gonna last a couple of years why not
stock the batteries for a couple years
five years after that sold ten years
when you can great little radios now I
can't get the batteries so I gotta throw
these brand new radios away and that
really really bugs me I'm gonna hate to
throw something away
especially if it's perfectly good it's
just the battery so I do contact West
Marine West pain was actually pretty
nice I caught I emailed their customer
service then they got right back to me
and said you know what this is what they
tell me those units usually only last
five years anyway I think it's time to
buy new units but here's the name and
number of the manufacturer where we
purchased these from so I contact the
manufacturer they don't have them they
suggest that I go to a custom battery
manufacturer and have a few of these
batteries made oh well I could do that
but to make two of these batteries cost
more than these units so now I'm back to
square one throw the units away well I'm
not gonna do that I'm gonna come up with
something else because I'm not throwing
these brand-new handhelds away I'll show
you what I did let's crack this open and
see we got okay there's a 12 volt
charger charging cradle
here's the unit itself well this is the
little belt clip nice and tight
here's battery let's take a look at this
okay
it's a lithium battery seven and a half
volts like I think of something I could
stack in batteries in here maybe I don't
know let's take a look at this let's
diagram the sound suit will fit okay
here's the unit turn it over and open up
the waterproof housing here's the
battery fits goes right in has a nice
ring in here it's waterproof it's great
if I could get this so here's my options
it's a 7.5 volts so to get seven half
volts I need a linked five
one-and-a-half volt doublea's but the
footprint is way too big to fit into
that little case so I said well if I
link five triple A's in a series I could
get seven half volts again I tried every
way possible is no way to get it into
here so look at option three ah a 9-volt
battery same height same width
sure it's a bolt and a half higher but
I'm sure there's a little bit of
variance that is allowed inside this
unit and if it burns up it burns up then
I have an excuse to throw it away so I'm
gonna try this see how a nine-volt works
in here if it does work all I have to do
is replace it with a rechargeable 9-volt
battery and I have a rechargeable VHF
it's worth a shot
okay for my test I need to get this
9-volt in here
these contacts need to make contact down
here on the pins but it's pretty loose
in here obviously I'm not going to get
the battery life that I would out of a
nice lithium that I would with a 9-volt
but at least I'll have an option to use
these
so let's Pat this in and see if this is
going to work
okay this looks like it's padded in
nicely it's gonna hold that nice and
secure right above the contact points
now I need to look at the battery and
the positive is on the left and the
negatives on the right and I know this
because this has this little spot on the
battery so you can't flip the battery
upside down but you could flip a 9-volt
upside down so I want to make sure that
I I mark this correctly so I'll just
print out a quick label
and place this in here next to the
terminals that way I know the the
battery orientation every time I put it
in okay this is look looking pretty good
I'm happy with that so we make sure we
put the positive on the positive
terminal and the negative on the
negative terminal see if I get it in
there
looks like it fits nice see if it closes
up in here
perfect
tear the plastic off give this a test
let's see well hang on one second
we'll get this ready just in case either
it's gonna pop on or it's gonna work
there we go one working VHF now I'm
gonna test how long this 9-volt will
operate this if I could get five hours
out of a 9-volt that'll make a nice
backup handheld then I can recharge them
obviously these are gonna be my primary
handhelds I'm gonna get another set of
nice ones but I will use these as
backups and I didn't have to throw them
away okay sorry I got so fired up here
must be the cold medication but darn it
West Marine if you're gonna sell a
battery operated device that takes a
custom West Marine battery at least you
could stock the custom battery so people
could use your product okay my rant is
over I'll get on to the next project
keep writing Emma I will
we're just finishing up a little ela had
a little lunch and tail thought he could
do it it's passed out again
don't laugh at him
he's gonna kill you I know are you doing
okay
Portillo
the copis is always right there mark a
lie it's hard to get motivated when you
don't feel well they're gonna need to
stay inside one more day
this one got put on the board dear today
I'm just gonna knock it out got a little
leak in one of the seals on our Japs go
ahead
I don't blame it we've been using those
five years now three people using the
same head five years this is the first
seal that failed not too bad and that's
one reason we went with jobs go it's cuz
we could get all the parts and pieces
real easy okay
this is an easy quick fix as long as you
find the parts these parts are real
simple and that's a big reason we chose
that Japs go this is off the shelf at
most marine stores here is the seal
housing assembly we had a little bit of
leak just popped up to the day and most
everywhere stocks these parts just need
a wrench some rubber gloves a little bit
of Lube and some paper towels gonna get
a little bit of water on this one well
hopefully it's water
this actually should be pretty easy
perfect for a day like this actually let
me show you what the problem is it's
right here so here's what's happening
when you flush see this little bit of
water a seal right here is starting to
get wet and you can see it spraying out
just a little bit we want to attack this
before it becomes a big issue okay to do
this okay not a very gloves gonna be a
bad idea
pull the plunger straight up nothin late
again I just saw it I noticed a little
drip right here's how I knew it was
becoming an issue okay pull up me a full
upright position
get a couple napkins ready cuz this is
where you may see a little moisture
rather than unscrewing it all four of
these you just give this a little turn
right here
this is the only time you're gonna see
any moisture this little bit of water
that's on the very top up here if you
don't get it out now it's gonna be on
the ground usually takes a napkin or two
okay pull this out it's that easy
this is the piece for replacing this has
the seal in it use unscrew the handle
pull the piece off
clean it up and we'll put the new piece
on put the handle that's the seal right
there that failed everything else looks
real good this must be the piece for up
here it is so now I'm just gonna put a
little bit of lubricant on this we'll
put it right here
give this a quarter-turn
never done ok let's take a look and see
if that fix a problem
it sure did look at that now it's dry
again okay quick easy fix on a nice
simple toilet and that's why we went
with these simple toilets they're not
real fancy not many parts but we could
get the parts anywhere and they're easy
to install I almost forgot the easiest
part
replacing the decal at the end
maybe it isn't the easiest part oh there
you go
okay now we're done okay that project
wasn't too bad
these light duty projects are nice when
you're not feeling well I think it's
time for a nap
[Music]
it is so nice to have fresh herbs and I
think my purse makes that had to hike
well
so you guys know from last week's
episode that teal and I celebrated our
20-year anniversary and my plans for a
romantic dinner were boiled by the flu
so this week we're going to try and do
it again and I'm gonna make the dinner
that it was originally planned on board
we love to go out to eat but we love to
eat at home more than anything you guys
know that I like to cook so I'm going to
recreate one of Till's most favorite
meals this is a special occasion because
it is our 20-year so we're gonna have
filet mignon potato fingerlings and rose
tip roasted Brussels sprouts with ample
Salamanca production

okay he'll put down the camera it's time
to eat okay okay I'm coming
it's like delicious
so this past week has been a little
brutal for us between coming home to a
winter storm with icy conditions and
then teal and Emma getting sick with the
flu it was hard to get motivated to get
some projects done on the boat
so hopefully this week will be much
better now that Emma's on the mend and
I'm thinking teals not too far behind
her we'll get some projects done if not
I think I'm gonna go ahead and just pick
up that sander and start working on some
projects maybe drill a couple holes um
maybe not maybe I don't order them to
get better anyways guys if you liked the
video don't forget to leave a like and
subscribe if you really liked it check
our patreon page in the link below
come back next week to see one of our
cool new videos see you then bye
