hey guys welcome back to SB basic it is
a gorgeous day you guys know that we
have been working on our sugar scoops
for quite a while now we've been
battling the rain the snow and the ice
but now we have own weather window like
it's so hard to say that sometimes but
anyways it's gonna be sunny for the next
I'd have to say five six days so we're
gonna jump on to the next step of our
steering which is our rudders teal is
assessing it right now we just pulled it
out of storage and it has been drying
this whole time there's some damage to
it and we're just trying to see the
extent of it so that we can class and
pop these babies back into the water
because you know we don't have just one
but we have two so let's get started
okay let's take a look at these here's
my runner these are actually kick up
rudders this is the profile of the boat
and this was designed to pivot on this
point here but I'm not really keen on
kick up rudders they do have their
purpose anchoring in a real shallow area
you could kick these up out but it's
kind of not really useful on our boat
anymore now that we have sail drives our
sail drives are the lowest point so why
not have fixed rudders so that's our
going to do is I'm gonna do a couple
repairs on these this will get buried
back in the boat and glassed-in
permanently and then we'll have just a
fixed rudder
should be a fun little project first
thing I need to do is break this all
apart get all the hardware off and do
some repairs on here there's a little
bit of a delamination I already looked
at this it looks like there's glass that
goes all the way over this but somebody
put an extra piece as a leading edge
here and it is delaminating so I'm gonna
do a repair here to do that I'm gonna
sand all this down and get a good look
at this first
but let's get this Hardware off first
break it all down
everything's coming off pretty smooth so
far it looks good too
there's a little bit of gap in this
looks like I need to insert a bushing in
here I'll get that all figured out later
should slide right up here
just like butter
that looks real good take a look at this
this looks mostly look like paint that's
peeling off but we'll get this sanded
down and see what's under here okay I've
got some other projects going in the
sugar scoop so we're gonna get Linn
suited up and she's gonna sand this down
for us what do you think
[Music]
[Applause]
I think is just so bad looks pretty good
you think a job it's a lot better shape
than I thought I think you did awesome
okay okay now I'll kind of go through
this and look at any damage and see if
we need to do thank you okay well get
your own okay Lin did real good on that
take I'm underutilizing her okay the
only thing is little bit of loose glass
right here I'll cut all this back and do
the repair first and then I'm gonna play
one more probably a 10 ounce cloth of
this whole thing just just to play it
safe let's check out the other side
absolutely beautiful art okay I just
flipped the rudder I did notice some
discolorations right here and it does
feel like yep you can see it
the glass is lifted just a little bit
right here except for right here at the
head
so I'm gonna excavate this out as well
do this repair and then lay another
sheet over and when I do this I'm gonna
double up this leading edge that's a
vulnerable part of the rudder so I want
to make sure I've got enough glass there
but overall happy with it okay to get
this little deal am out of here
I'm gonna cut right through the glass
and see what's going on underneath here
okay that's good look at that it's
treated and perfect just had a little
air bubble under there
so I'll cut these out and make a repair
okay dug it all out looks real good in
there I'm gonna slightly stuff this give
that epoxy something to bite you okay
since this is recess so far I'm going to
use a thick and epoxy to get it up to
this level and then like glass over the
whole thing
hey it looks good
[Music]
and just like that it's a new day
a little bit of wind on the lake put the
epoxy cured nicely overnight here's
where I dished out that air bubble
filled it with thickened epoxy and I did
this in a couple other areas remember
that little delaminated edge I carved
out any loose areas and filled that as
well so now I'll go through and sand
this up and prep it for glass cloth
I want to indid this piece as well off
fine a couple areas I had to touch up
will do this in at the same time so
let's start with this
[Music]
okay that feels nice okay work this
thing over for probably an hour just now
everything feels real good here's the
patch can it feel it anymore remember
this leading edge it was all deal aming
I carved all that out and look at that
looks real good okay
now I'll attack this piece okay here's
where I stand that's ready for glass I
have still a little bit more repairs to
do on this I'll pull this aside I'll get
epoxy on this tonight but I do want to
get some glass going on this see if the
girls are up to working on the challenge
I see easy okay
keep at it how many lockers have you
gone through everything on this side and
all of Emma's and half of yours okay
we'll see where we're at
I haven't done anything down here yet
though or Bobby I've got a ton of stuff
to go through still as well so we got a
long way to go but good job
oh okay back at it can't laying on a
piece of cloth over this
just gonna cut it
a couple inches wild on each side
that looks good
Thank You seven okay I feel good
everything's been prepped vacuum the
surface just mixed up some West system
epoxy with a 205 hardener it's a fast
hardener it's a little chilly today
start with seven pumps should be real
close to that I might need a pump or two
extra to finish this off but we'll see
it's gonna wet the surface and lay out
the clock
get this saturated
it's laid down nicely on the top here
start folding this over I want this
leading edge to wrap around
that seemed that DeLand was about right
here I want to get like a full inch over
this
it looks like I've done that so we'll
just keep working this and get it to lay
down
kind of worked my way around this corner
here
and it's getting there
this is laying down nicely what I always
do is draw a center line and pull from
each side never push cuz it'll that's
how you create the bubbles and wrinkles
if you're always pulling to the outside
edge you're creating a lot of tension in
that cloth then pulling it tight and
it's sucking it down to your substrate
so always pull to the outer edge of
whatever you're working on
[Music]
here's teal with the second redder Wow
so awkward I know I know it's not too
bad right so we finished the first part
of first redder doing some glass work
and now we're bringing that second
redder to start assessing this one this
one looks actually a little bit worse
than the first one so we'll probably
have to spend a little bit more time on
it oh come on it's nothing okay let's
take a look at this here we go starboard
rudder Assembly's right here I'll break
down the hardware strip this apart and
take a look at it looks like there's a
little bit of damage on this one a
little bit more than the other but let's
get this all sanded down see we're in
for meanwhile here's the port rudder
bacon up here in the Sun yeah look at
this the Sun
it's just blazing I hear it's not hot
but man it feels good okay it's good for
this epoxy though
oh yeah it's starting to kick already
okay
let's break this one down
there we go came off just like I'm
supposed to okay good morning Sun is
still out so that means I'm still
working these rudders I'm gonna take
advantage of this nice weather while I
can this epoxy cured nicely overnight
look it here's my patch get that Sheen
right of the Sun on there you can't see
a thing look at that this just laid down
nicely no bubbles it's ready for me to
trim it up sandy the side and we'll get
cloth on the other side of this
my other goal for today is start on this
other rudder start repairing all the
damage get this thing sanded down
prepped up and do the epoxy repairs on
this rudder I want to start getting
glass on this by tomorrow okay so let's
get to work
I just spent a little time sanding this
edge this is where I had folded it over
and lap it up about two inches onto here
so I just put a nice taper on this so
when I've get this glass down you won't
see that transition right here
so it's a good idea always when you're
working with epoxy
to wipe down the surface before you sand
it even or before you lay up another
layer of a glass cloth down just give it
a little scrub with soap and water gets
that flush off there and that blush is a
chemical reaction that occurs when it's
curing it leaves like an oily film on
the top surface you can use peel ply
that helps get rid of it but in this
case just takes a second to give it a
quick scrub and you get most of it off
okay here's the next piece of cloth got
this all laid out
let's go mix up some epoxy and get this
down so I'm taking a break from
organizing and unloading because I think
I got a good jump on it already today
and it looks like teal is finishing up
this runner layup
are you gonna move that out so that I
can stand on the next one yep in about
20 minutes 15 minutes 20 minutes I have
this thing done I'll put this out in the
Sun because I'm volunteering my services
yes please you did such a good job on
this one let's uh put the starboard
rudder up here I think I'm pretty good
at sanding not too bad
I'll have him it turned out pretty nice
okay hurry up good this laid down nicely
let's get this up in the Sun to cure
we have to cook down the stairs lift it
up high over your head okay
got Lin all set up here's her starboard
rudder all the gear she needs she could
do that while I dive back into the sugar
scoop get some work done back there
okay I'm in the sugar Scoob test-fitting
my panel here looks like it's getting
real close here got a little bit of
shaping to do yet before I get this in
permanently but it's good clothes see
how they're doing
not gonna lie I'm loving it kicking this
project into high gear really a lot done
when the weather's holding up it looks
good I like it oh that's smooth
well we got work to do but yeah this
chopper rudder is prepped look at this I
had quite a bit of bubbling in here but
it was just under the glass and never
got down to the substrate this is all
nice and clean so I'm gonna do the
repairs on these before I overlay this
with a new surface okay I got enough
epoxy going right now I've got some
material laying up in the sugar scoop
I've applied the patches to the
starboard rudder the port rudder has its
final coat on so we'll let all this bake
in the Sun for a little bit and
hopefully it fires off for night hits
okay
I think we'll call it for today so my
moms on a mission she's trying to get a
lot of stuff off the boat and so my dad
has to load some move it off
how you doing last one first day we'll
see what else she comes up with yeah
whoo high five high five go see if you
could help her okay good morning
[Music]
beautiful day again it looks like it may
be the last nice day of this series of
nice days did get cold last night though
in the 20s high 20s so late last night I
threw the rudders in this line make sure
they were nice and warm these fired off
yesterday but I just wanted to keep them
into salon overnight make sure they're
nice and warm when I put the next layer
of cloth on for today Emma how school
work okay
keep at it let's get to work
okay just put another day of work into
these things
this one's about done our port rudder
has multiple layers on it all wrapped
around the edges and blend it in got a
little more touch up on this this one
got a good jump on got one side done
we'll keep going on that in the meantime
I still have these two attack I'm gonna
save those for another time explain what
these are and what needs to happen to
these but for now I think I'll call it
catch you guys later
[Music]
my dad has so many projects going on
right now he has a rudder on the salon
table and down here he has he has the
wheel and then right here he has all the
steering stuff and then he always has
nine relying on the walls in the guest
room it's the worst he has the rudder on
the bed and then he has some more rudder
