and good morning welcome back dusty
basic you know we had the weather to put
paint down and we've been taking
advantage of it today's a little cloudy
and there's a little bit of rain
threatening but I think it's gonna hold
off so we got to keep going
last week I was painting the holes I had
had one coat on to stop the video since
then I put additional coats on peel the
tape and I'm real happy with how
everything's looking I need to tack this
next area right here and we'll be doing
that I'll be prepping today and painting
tomorrow
but I've got a whole lot of other things
to do before we splash we need to pay
attention to the sale drives rub rails
get the solar going and just a list of
other little items but we want to get in
the water soon I would think the next
week to two we will be back in the water
pending weather so fingers crossed
let's get to work
[Music]
okay that was a big day six and a half
seven hours of sanding and fairing and
and just prepping the surface but I
think I'm in a good position to throw
some paint down tomorrow morning it's a
good thing
girls come back tomorrow and both
looking pretty good I think they'll be
impressed but we'll see okay it's about
dinnertime
I'll go whip something up relax a little
bit and hit this hard first thing in the
morning still good about though we'll
see how it turns out
[Music]
okay good morning
perfect today compass is barking at the
crow on the mast and the wind is just
died down
sun's out it's a good day to get this
white girls are coming back today and
it'd be a nice first impression when
they pull up on the boat and see all the
white surfaces with fresh paint so I'm
gonna jump on that this morning
and shouldn't take me too long then I'm
off to Seattle to pick them up
[Music]
[Music]
okay my paintings all done looks good
I'm actually real happy with it got done
in the nick of time
heading out to go pick up the girls it's
quite the journey takes a couple hours
to get there going to see tak Tempest is
excited you ready for a trip buddy
[Music]
I'll take it that's a yes okay we're
gonna head out get back in the morning
[Music]
[Music]
okay I'm three hours into this trip so
far I'd wait so long to get on the ferry
busy weekend traffic their flight lands
in about 45 minutes I'm gonna cut it
close to those four hours and 17 minutes
from the boat to the airport it's quite
the journey compass flip moans the way
they doing buddy you ready for a walk
but the girls just texted me they landed
about 10 minutes ago they're walking
through the terminal and the timing
looks like it's gonna be about perfect
I should just pull right in and pick
them up
[Music]
though they are
[Music]
[Music]
back okay we just pulled into the boat
girls are anxious to see the paint let's
see what they think
[Music]
those looks so nice it's like a mirror
awesome
you like it yeah oh you did good
okay get a lot done I did it's uh I
think it looks pretty good this was a
big step compass is just glad to be back
[Music]
take it all in was it bad I mean it was
long days by yourself but you know what
it's good I know it's all worth it huh
yeah this is a big project coming up I
know it'll look just as nice so I'm not
worried I was all excited to get the
last coat of paint on this area I'll
prep it today but I won't be able to
paint the wind is out of the South this
direction so every time a car comes by
the dust would just fly right into the
paint so that's gonna wait till tomorrow
morning but I don't want to waste a day
so I'll get this all sanded out and I'll
be ready for that first thing tomorrow
morning but for now I'm gonna start
working on this rub rail I rip this out
of starboard lumber and it's gonna go
the full length of the boat I have quite
a bit to do to prepare this I need to
router the edges and drill a nice screw
pattern on it so I'll start prepping
this so this could go down soon now that
the paint's on the outside so it's a
good call not painting today I just
found out they'll be launching the
Michelle and the Mary Ellen here in the
next couple hours that's gonna create a
lot of dust so it's good good thing
we're switching gears and working on
another project
[Music]
[Music]
got a late start today but while they
were splashing the Mary Ellen and
Michelle I've able to prep this entire
service for paint tomorrow because I'll
sand it out with 220 and wipe down so
I'll be ready to jump on that first
thing in the morning
I was also able to lay out the rub rail
there's a hundred and seventy eight
marks what's gonna drill those all by
hand but I walked around the yard here
and found something's gonna loan me
their drill press so I'll be able to use
that here
well the kicker is I have to wait a day
they're gonna be out of town tomorrow
but I could use it the following day I
think it's worth the wait I don't want
to drill those by hand but it's been a
long day but what we're gonna do is take
it easy maybe Emma and I are gonna take
a good little walk around the yard a lot
of action out there and spend a little
family time relax tonight
hit it hard tomorrow so we just watched
the Mary Ellen splashdown
and he invited us over to walk through
his boat
pretty cool boat so I'm jumping on it
never miss a chance to see such a
interesting vessel this thing's coming
up on a hundred years old should be cool
[Music]
so the schooner the cheer board is the
Mary Ellen she was built in 1922 in
Vancouver BC by Arthur Moscot she was
originally supposed to be an engine las'
halibut schooner and that was how our
keel was laid the Builder got an order
for two steam tugboats and he ended up
converting her into a tugboat and she
worked for fifty-five years as a tug
hauling limestone barges from Texas ADA
Island north of Vancouver to Los Angeles
and it was basically to build the
freeway system so in 1979 when she was
retired from her life as a tug the she
was put on the beach to rot away cuz
she's a wood boat build out a big fir
and somebody saw her and realized she
was a schooner hull looked up her
history got the original rigging plan
from the Canadian government and
rerigged her but the original pilot
house she was supposed to have on her
and she's been in this configuration as
a passenger schooner for since 1979 we
got her in 2007 did a complete rebuild
on the hull took out all the rotten wood
which was extensive repowered her with a
modern diesel engine and she's just been
a wonderful heavy boat three hundred and
twenty thousand pounds and we just got
out of the yard from fixing the rudder
and now we're sitting here with friends
talking about the history of the boat
[Music]
[Music]
my vacation was really fun but it's
great to be back I gotta watch my dad
anyway he hits his head on everything
are you talking about me again yeah yep
still painting it's going good though
yeah breakfast will be ready pretty soon
okay I'll be done in about ten minutes
and I'll be up okay well I got a good
jump on today I've already painted the
final coat up here I'll let it dry for
about another hour and peel the tape
meanwhile I'm setting up my rub rail
station over here I laid them all out
yesterday 178 holes I've drilled
starting to drill off the pilot holes
peel the tape and put a quarter inch
roundover on all those
[Music]
it's quite a bit to do it's gonna take
me a couple hours I think to get all
this done but needs to be done so I'll
get at it
[Music]
here's something we don't really talk
about is the mess we have to contain all
of our debris and following seal around
is a full-time job not only to make sure
he doesn't hit his head which is Emma's
job I go along behind him and I make
sure that nothing gets into the yard you
sound like a four year old I didn't walk
around with a helmet on is that what you
want cleaned up her mess and got it all
contained it doesn't take much effort
just to keep your tarps clean and it's
gonna help keep the environment clean
and the cleaner we keep it the longer
this boatyard to be around not many boat
yards let you work on your own projects
anymore and if everybody was responsible
this boat yard could continue that so
we're doing our part okay we've been at
it for I don't know three four hours
already this morning I'm working on the
rub rails and Lynn's been scrubbing the
holes down on the lower is fresh paint
this other paint is about a year and a
half two years old but it's got real
dusty here in the yard and she's
preparing it for all our graphics that
are coming in here in a couple of days
so got to get it all polished up let's
check out how she's doing
[Music]
okay how're you doing
I know now you're in the Sun it's
getting more resonant yeah okay well
just keep at it we gotta get this done
don't we take a break you just started
four hours ago are you doing good look
at that it's starting to just shine
right back up I can't even tell the
difference between the the old pain and
the new pain is that a scuff mark or is
it a just grease
somebody must have hit us okay
well I'll work on that so I was gonna
wait to use a drill press to get nice
uniform countersinks on this but I'd
have to wait another day so I came up
with something that worked
I took my counter sink bit and took the
drill bit and turned it around that way
I could set my depth and use that as a
stopper and it worked out pretty good
I'm happy with it just have to make sure
I'm drilling on a surface that doesn't
dent in and it keeps them nice and
uniform
[Music]
[Music]
okay that wasn't too bad I feel good
about that every hole is pretty
consistent so next thing I need to do is
now bore the center hole to accept my
number ten screw but it's lunchtime
I think I'll have a my help me after
lunch I think she'll get a kick out of
that
okay so you have a hundred and seventy
eight holes to drill okay so here's what
you do
see the hole yep just put it right past
this edge right here take your job put
put your hand like like on the next hole
not too close to you and then yeah I'll
do the first one you do them from it so
you put it right right here and just
really slow it like that I see that
little bit right there you could leave
it on or take it off it's up to your
choice okay so just get the next one
over
never scoot your hand to the next hole
yeah keep it straight
keep it spinning and pull it out perfect
okay 176 left keep it spinning and pull
up yeah it helps it come out yeah 175
bucks you got it
[Music]
[Music]
176 177
[Music]
Wow okay we're getting our first 8 foot
length up and I'm real happy with how
it's going down we're working out the
kinks and getting our system down
we have fasteners every six inches
[Music]
and we have a blind fastener on a minor
cut at the end of each piece what I
think so far I think it looks good
makes a huge difference it does okay we
there's the first piece down we have 11
to go so we figured out that we put five
or six screws at a time I just float it
off the surface and Linde hands me a
piece of butyl I could wrap it around
the screw threads from the backside
[Music]
and then we cinch them up and leave the
last screw a little loose so we don't
have to bend it out so far for the next
series of five but so far goes pretty
quick I don't we time this one correct
[Music]
[Music]
okay good morning we finished up one of
the rub rails last night it turned out
pretty good real happy with it you know
we put this rub rail on for a purpose
it's to protect the boat when you're
pulling up to a dock or against a piling
originally I cut this out of inch and a
half wide
starboard lumber but I thought it looked
too chunky too big on the side of the
boat after putting 44 feet down just
looks like a thin little strip so I'm
real happy with it let's take a look at
it
[Music]
I used a pretty stout screw
to attach it every six inches the full
length give us some strength and the
beauty of this if we do take an impact
now up against the dock or another boat
rafting up to us or whatever it may be
I could just take one of these lengths
out and replace it real easy so this
should work out nicely for us now we've
got to finish up the other side we'll
get that done this morning and on to
other projects thanks for watching this
