previously
on onboard lifestyle we remove our old
batteries
inverter and charger and install
battleborn's bb
112 batteries along with a victron
multi-plus
3012 and bmv 712 smart battery monitor
all as emma was a bit reluctant to help
with the guidance from battleborn's
technical support the installation
went real smooth we're exposing your
little dirty secret you're messy
the crew was anxious to test out the new
system so we buttoned up a few projects
and did just that
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
okay i could sit here and test the
system all day long
sitting in the marina but that's not
what we need
you know what we need to do we need to
get out of here out to a nice anchorage
and really see how these new lithium
batteries perform
did you hear me lynn i heard you were
going today
today i want to go this morning let's go
now
you didn't tell me just let me wash my
face and then we can go
[Music]
i've been working on our lazy jack
system
[Music]
[Music]
okay think we got this
i hate sewing this is kicking my ass
oh you're doing good just stay positive
because
i'm trying to but literally this stack
pack is beating me up i'm like
and like it's eating me alive i swear
[Music]
okay this is a big day for us yup emma's
getting her braces off
my braces i'm getting my braces off
today i'm so excited
i know it is a big day for us this just
means that we get to leave after this
pending weather of course but how do you
feel emma
my teeth are gonna look like normal
teeth normal teeth
as opposed to the non-normal teeth that
you have right now yeah
okay we're right on time let's get in
there
so i'm just going to squeeze on these
and come right off
any last words emma no
yeah so how does that feel great thank
you you're very welcome so what we're
going to do is we'll take impressions
and we're going to make a series of
retainers
some to wear some glues okay how's it
feel
feels awesome does it feel slimy yes
from start to finish my experience with
dr payne and his staff was amazing
dr payne understood that we were on a
tight schedule and so he worked hard to
give me the smile i could be proud of
i will always be grateful to him and his
staff at american river orthodontics
thanks guys
you see and notice that we are
in our dinghy on the dock why you ask
well it's melting
we have had this dinghy for
a good nine years and it's done well for
us
with one exception this is a pvc
dinghy and we're realizing that it is
deteriorating
a lot faster now that we are in
warmer climates and it's only going to
get worse so we're going to try to
i guess prolong the life of this dinghy
for as long as we can
until the time comes that we have to
get a better one in the meantime we have
a lot of cleaning to do
[Music]
we need to get this mini hard top up
so we went and picked up our post from
the
fabricator the other day
where we're gonna go
and then i see the uh yep you got the
two in the right orientation
and then the blank perfect yeah i think
it looks great
okay so did you do these yeah
these are a little a little difficult
but charlie said huh they were tricky
definitely we'll see we'll see i mean
they're no they look like they're dead
on i mean look at sight in each one of
these they are such a tricky one because
it was kind of a compound
right so well cool it looks great it's
time to get these in
got a little break in the wind take
every chance i can
to work outside
if you followed
all of my templates everything should
just slide into place and the first one
does
that's a good sign
so far the posts are lining right up
a little bit adjustments here and there
but it's just going pretty smooth put
the next one in
just put a little wrap of butyl tape on
here
i don't want any of these little bolts
leaking through i'm all set to install
another post here
i'm using starboard lumber backer plates
i built
backer plates a few weeks back
for all the hardware that had to be
attached to the hard top
i kept making all of my factor plates
and risers
the risers are for the solar panels
actually there's a couple of backer
plates here as well
and these larger backer plates are for
the copper over the helm top
cutting it out of king starboard lumber
i use a hole saw
to cut them out i shape them on a belt
sander
and on the backer plates i use a quarter
inch round over
works pretty slick a couple different uh
riser
thicknesses depending on where it goes
on the solar array
then we're about done
just a little bit more finish sanding to
make these look pretty
so
our helm top install has been kicking
our butts guys because this
is just dragging on forever and you know
we were able to find a welder to do our
framework fred
was he did a great job and honestly we
wanted him to do our post but
he just didn't have the right equipment
but i always have a plan
and so i called charlie who did our
original post
and he said that he could absolutely do
it for us so not only did we
drop it off on friday for him but he got
it done
over the weekend because monday morning
it was ready we were trying to
not use charlie just because we had
moved out of the area and driving to
the napa area is an additional hour and
a half
so that was a little inconvenient but he
pulled through for us guys he did an
amazing job
so this is all based on teal's
calculations
so we put the post up there and i'm
hoping
as soon as the wind dies down we're
gonna see if teal's calculations
let's put this up even in the wind i
think we can do this i'm scared it's
gonna like fly off
well let's try at least all right let's
do this
[Music]
[Music]
teal has been tearing apart our boat
our lithium batteries are in okay go
ahead let's get going
looks like i have everything in
our first night at anchor after
all this time and all this hard work i
feel like
celebrating so we're going to be making
some
pastries with some puff pastry and a
lemon cream filling
i don't think i have slept so well in so
long it just is the best feeling
being out at anchor with
just the seas or the water just kind of
rocking you to sleep
[Music]
thank you
[Music]
okay first breakfast at anchor i'm
excited
i'm hungry help us you get down
dive in
[Music]
we'll see if i can do this without
losing the
the mic this anchorage
is beautiful with the exception of one
thing
first day we got here it was quiet
wind picked up a little bit in the
afternoon but ever since then
it's been blowing 25 to 35.
every day starts building in the
afternoons
peaks around seven eight i'd say six or
seven o'clock
and then starts dying off we do sleep
well here
get a nice calm evening but boy during
the days
it's howling yeah we started with
25 30 boats when we got here
they've slowly whittled away to none
left
we're the last ones
[Music]
it feels good to have the anchorage to
ourselves there was both dragging all
around us
[Music]
our rock has been holding pretty steady
got an anchor watch system going
let me hang on here and we haven't
budged one
foot
this is sustained 30 right now
gusting to 35.
it's a muddy bottom here and
we anchored in seven feet of water at
low tide
put out a hundred feet of chain
so i think we have a good scope well
obviously we do we've been holding this
steady for four days now
i'm going inside
okay so what's the consensus i know what
i feel
yeah let's talk about these batteries a
minute i
am absolutely thrilled our
last batteries the flooded batteries you
know we kind of got into a routine where
we knew how they performed and we'd have
to
kind of juggle our power consumption and
shut off the refrigeration occasionally
and kick on an engine here and there you
know
solar was not quite keeping up with it
but these new batteries holy cow
we were out there four days five days
five days four nights
and we'd wake up in the morning and the
state of charge would be at 92
to 94 which is amazing we've barely
touched this thing
and we're using them we're not shutting
off refrigeration we're running
it was blustery outside we were really
cold so we were running both of our
diesel heaters
[Music]
and they didn't even budge
i mean why i don't think we made a dent
on those batteries
well we did a small dent but but the
cool thing i thought was
even though we were at let's say we were
down to 92 one morning
or if we were by nine o'clock every
morning those solar panels
even though we only have 500 watts right
now they were
putting out anywhere from 350
360 to 375 watts which was about 25 26
amps we'd be topped off and our
batteries would show a hundred percent
by nine o'clock maybe 9 30 at the latest
it was kind of overcast here and there
so i mean that excites me
especially since we're adding another
600 watts yeah
and i think that extra 600 watts is
gonna be important because on
totally overcast days if we hit spells
of of
heavy clouds we're still gonna be able
to top these batteries off
really fast i have no doubt that it's
gonna happen so
also i'm thinking now since we have so
much power
uh we're gonna probably get an induction
cooktop
as well i love cooking with propane but
going into
other countries we're hearing that it's
gonna get more and more difficult to get
those tanks refilled so
having an induction cooktop is uh in my
future
and i'm thinking why not if we could
handle that and
our solar's keeping up and these
batteries could handle that load
boy that would not even be an option
with our flooded batteries this is a
absolute game changer because this just
means that we can be offered much longer
and being able to have the refrigeration
um you know we can do longer passages we
can do
the crossing to the south pacific you
know who knows it doesn't matter
because it's got power as it stands
right now yeah we could be off-grid
indefinitely
that is cool i mean smiles on our face
well here comes the wind again
here we go so here's to more power
to the lithium batteries loving them
for watching this week's episode of
onboard lifestyle
these past few weeks have been wild i
got my braces off
my dad installed our new lithiums and we
went awkward
i love being on anchor and it was thanks
to our changeover to battleborn
batteries
