previously on onboard lifestyle emma
takes a much deserved break from her
parents
okay
have fun i will be good i will don't
miss us
don't miss us too much which gives teal
and i a chance to get down to business
we have a lot of stuff to do too so
on installing our new precision mainsail
with this major upgrade to basic
complete it's time to leave marina del
rey to shake down our new main in route
to catalina island
before we left i took compass for a long
walk through the burton chase park where
he enjoyed one of his favorite
activities terrorizing the local
squirrels campus get to squirrel
there's a lot of colors
i don't know where to go
see a lot of colors
only feeling blue
got the kid back yeah it was really nice
to see family but i mean i'm happy to be
back this is really nice it is so now
that we have her back it's time for us
to head out to catalina island
it's been so long since we've been there
and it'll be emma's first time so it
should be a pretty fun experience for
her
and look at this it's just beautiful
blue skies and hopefully we'll get some
wind
and she's trying to show you how much
taller she is to me
we get it you're tall
there's a lot of colors
lost within a haze
don't rely on others
to get you through the maze
the
dreams are not
the same for me
standing
by
the open sea
so
anymore
there are a lot of voices
drowning in the sea
there's too many voices
talking back at me
so here we are we grabbed a mooring ball
in emerald bay on catalina island
sun's just going down
it's warm out the water's
just beautiful
we're just hanging out what do you think
welcome to catalina island this
is obviously
an amazing spot
and look i can see california right
there
but this is just
a great start to our week here on the
island
it's just it doesn't get better than
this not too shabby no
i'm just enjoying it
the next morning was beautiful so the
crew decided to go ashore and take a
nice long hike around the area
the views of emerald bay were
spectacular and it felt good to get out
and stretch our legs
well that was fun
but it's getting a little warm
i think it's time for us to uh
take a little dip in the bay
this feels so nice to uh get a couple
miles in
it's been a while
the day is still young so i decided to
head over to a reef i saw on the charts
to try to catch something for dinner
meanwhile the girls take advantage of
the perfect weather and wander around
the bay enjoying each other's company
and the occasional dip in the warmest
water we have seen so far this year
uh oh put it away all with toys
emma says she's done for today on the
paddle boards
and we had a little issue right
i don't want to talk about it
you went fishing and what happened
well
i'm going to say that
outboard
would not start way out there
and what did i do i'd roll back
but about four rows in
four lock breaks so that just added
insult to injury right i was sweating i
was hot
i was cussing
were you not really
put up man
i mean here we are
in paradise right now
and outboard's not working
looks like we have to paddle everywhere
now
until we get into some place where i
could uh break bust into that thing
that's not that easy well
i don't know if it's going to be
difficult but it's just going to be a
mess i don't want to do it sitting here
so we enjoy and then look at that
there's a fishing boat right there they
catch it
because you were right around that area
there's like a little rock area right
there
man
oh well oh i think they caught something
shut up i'm just kidding
so the day started out sunny 80 degrees
clear as can be we had a great time
outside then these clouds started
pushing in i heard there was this
monsoonal moisture pushing from the
south with a potential with some energy
in it and it hit us they hit us quick
over the course of about an hour it just
clouded up
it's all pushing
actually it's just pushing east of us
we're missing most of it we're getting a
few scattered rain showers but they're
evaporating pretty quick
but so much energy in this lightning all
around us super cool
welcome home emma
it's nice i like it
this is crazy we haven't had
rain
like this and how many months since
seattle
no we had some in napa i know we had
some but this reminds us a poem doesn't
it
it's crazy it's like lightning and
thunder
i mean there's so much energy up there
it's just like
electricity all around us for the last
what eight or ten hours now
pretty cool actually
look we had to bring everything in
because we wanted to get wet
it is just
dumping out there i am pretty proud of
compass because
he's just kind of chilling he's just
relaxing
well that was an interesting night
you know we didn't think we were
supposed to get much wind out of those
uh cells that were rolling through
but we sure did about two
two o'clock this morning
25 to 30 knots sustained for about two
hours
out of the east so it just blew right
into emerald bay here
got a little bit of this fetch left but
we had
i would say two to four foot rollers
just crashing through here it was uh
it was a roller coaster for a while
i was watching uh boats
all these boats out here
anchor and re-anchor a few times last
night
nobody could get a good bite it's really
tough to anchor here off the island it
just goes to
uh 200 feet real fast
so
like this boat right here i guarantee
you he's anchored in 75 50 to 75 feet of
water so he's got a lot of chain out
oh well
the wind's died down to nothing
just waiting for uh
this bay to calm down it should uh
pretty soon
looks like it's gonna be a nice day
though
we rode real nice here on the on the
mooring and
i wasn't worried at all
okay don't
this is new for us
there's a slight current in wind
and we got to make sure that the mooring
line
clears it
so it doesn't get tangled in our props
okay borderline is sinking down
hold on
more
just got to watch out for the mooring
behind us
and clear this mooring in front of us
behind you i did
where do you want me to go out here
no
let's pivot this way it's over here
baby steps for teal
he's letting me take the helm a little
bit more than he used to
so many mooring balls around here okay
there's 800 mooring balls on this island
really
that's a lot
took up all the good anchorages they did
i know look every little coke because
it's packed with mooring balls
and no boats
it's midweek nobody's out here
well so far we are enjoying our stay on
catalina island we
spent a couple days in emerald bay and
now we want to go over to cherry cove
before we head into avalon
our
original plan was to
head after our state here to go to
oceanside pick up a couple supplies then
head into san diego but during the time
that we left marina del rey and got to
catalina island there was that big oil
spill and so i've been checking around
most of the ports are closed
no traffic in and out of the harbor
and oceanside is clear from there but
the airport is full with all of the
emergency vessels that are out to help
assist the cleanup
so that option is off the table so teal
and i were talking this morning and most
likely we're just gonna uh
head straight from avalon to san diego
and do an overnight passage uh and just
you know just deal with it it's just uh
it's really sad thinking about
all the sea life
and all the beaches and everybody that
has been affected because of this oil
spill
just sucks
in the meantime we're trying to stay
positive and just enjoy our surroundings
while we can
hopefully we get some wind i always say
that because i always want wind
but probably not a good idea when you're
picking up a mooring wall
doesn't that uh rock look like it's
glowing yeah this is so beautiful
ah
it looks nice but you know that there's
a storm brewing i know
are you just contemplating life
i'm catching dinner
yeah
we'll see
what are we having for dinner tonight i
want fish what did i catch for dinner
we have a straight bath but it's we need
more a nice little sea bass for you but
you need more that's what i'm trying to
do well you guys eat a lot
well i will do my best if only we had a
shore boat to take us
along the rocks
oh we could paddle over there
i'm not paddling
bring that thing up i'm
still
a little torqued about that
yeah that's depressing
it's okay we're gonna get down
back into port and get it fixed we'll
get it fixed i know but for now look at
this
i know everywhere we go we got a paddle
at least you have a paddle
i can't even row the thing
broke the orlock
i know it was kind of pathetic watching
you um
fish on the paddleboard yesterday what
it was actually gonna find i might do
that again today
i just vision myself catching a big one
and it serves me around the bay
that would be nice
i wouldn't complain i'll follow you with
the other paddleboard okay actually i'm
thinking i might take that out i was
thinking why don't you use the kayak
no i'll take the paddle board over it's
so easy i can just go right along these
rocks
catch you a big fatty for dinner
okay maybe i'll do that
there he goes
trying to catch some dinner
this is actually kind of nice for teal
to just kind of
go fishing and decompress
i know that things break down on boats
but sometimes it's just depressing
so this is just nice for him
so i'm thinking well teal is uh out
fishing it's a day of beauty for emma
and i it's been a long time since we've
had a trim
and i know that we're due because our
hair is just getting a little too long
if it was up to emma we i'd never cut
her hair
but i think that we need a little trim
yeah
so we left catalina about an hour ago
we had a
fun time we're there i don't know close
to a week just bouncing around to a
couple of little uh
bays
it's a beautiful island but
with we have uh we had to make a
decision
we're trying to work our way south
we've got this oil spill
that's been
mucking up
all the ports
we wanted to go into newport and
meet some family and
head south from there but it's closed
so we start calling around
pretty much everywhere is either closed
or full
lynn made 50 phone calls yesterday
trying to find a place to go
there's
nothing and we were a little concerned
because
it's getting a little blustery on the
island for the next couple of days and
it's going to build on tuesday
to uh well some of the models are
showing
a gusting
50 plus
with c's 8 to 10 feet
and we don't want to be
on catalina for that
who knows if it pans out but why risk it
so we're
searching around
we have a couple projects we want to
still do before we hit mexico so we want
to hit at least a quarter two before uh
we get into ensenada
she calls around
and uh
found a place so we left this morning
it's about 25 miles from catalina
and the winds are starting to build
already
they're not bad today
10 to 15 building to 15 plus in the
afternoon
so it's perfect sailing conditions for
us
we're clipping along at
five to six knots right now uh
seas are
not too bad two to three foot
buildings to uh probably four to five
foot later in the afternoon
it's getting chilly though this cold
front is coming from the north
so temperatures are going to be below
normal here
i think uh
we woke up
in the high 50s which is rare for this
uh part of the country
and it's only going to get colder for
the next couple of days but then
it warms right back up so we'll be in a
good spot to
get in and fix that outboard get a
couple projects done
and uh still start pushing south we got
to keep pushing south we want to be an
ensenada here in two weeks
well it's a nice sale at least

excited to sail to catalina island and
explore
little did we know an oil spill and yale
warnings stopped our plans not to
mention our outboard dying on us come
back next week to see how we adjust to
make it work see you then
