This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!

Iola
up around the roof ear so lovely sunny
days so it's radiating a nice piece of
heat it's gonna be a little bit
different this week
a little bit there's one or two things
we need to do this week first thing is
to have a look at what's been going on
and as you probably tell Lane deck is
now got the full six coats of the epoxy
primer on it primer sealer strip the
masking tape off so she's looking pretty
good ready for deck paint

yeah and the next thing that's going on
of just my barrister starts of your
turns nao carry the barrister starts on
on the dead box I've just cut the curve
on that piece so that it fits but snug
against there yeah the barest of starts
as I say should be trying to get on with
that later

and then a couple of things need to talk
about let's go in the other shade for a
moment yes I say a little different
there's a couple of questions from
patrons want to answer and then but
first of all this is ill hatch talk and
I'm preparing to explain it in the black
locust or just million off all these
strips I've got the frame roughed out
drapes obviously will come along and say
cut the size over there to curl it so it
matches with the letter attached
[Applause]

[Laughter]
so in the black locust is this yeah bit
of a message of it it irritates a bit so
I have to wear a mask when the Covenant
the sawdust is an irritant so you need
to master in sorry but let's in Burgas
really fill that one as I say it's a
couple of questions from patrons or no
answer so we need to go to the boat
further it Chris asked about the the
fillers that are using and perhaps I
wasn't hundred percent sure what he
meant so I've got a few words about
various fillers that I use I'm used
entirely epoxy products the paint the
epoxy I use the fillers this all comes
from a German supplier called Binker I
haven't really mentioned that much I
I've mentioned it in passing but the
reason is that that they only supply
within the EU and some of their products
only supply within Germany so you know
these videos go out worldwide there's
not much point in encouraging you to use
Binker products when he can't get them
but i'm using bigger products all
through so the reason that I used the
bare reasons here Carrie you know
hardener and then risen to to unmix
obviously it's important to keep them
separate I'm sure you know about that -
Tom Mix and then if I'm using a glue so
just go back a step if I'm glass fibrin
just be pure reason simply a mix of that
of the resin simple I'm using a glue
I've thicken that to taste
with microfibers like that easy enough
if I'm making a filler myself well for
really chunky fitting and I fear to use
this I used it under the Toro for the
big gap that was there but some chopped
fibers it's just when you mix those up
you get a 30 horrendous mixture of stuff
that not easy to work but for easily
sand of all filler I use this is a
microspheres these things slowly look
they almost fly away this solar light
and that's see they're very difficult to
mix into the resident very difficult
like a float on top of the resin takes
some patience after wear a mask I watch
it breathing in yeah
so if I'm making an easily sandable
filler I tend to use some of the
microfibers some of the microspheres on
occasions are mixing some West system
for our 7 which is the red stuff but
actually I've got some other way system
microspheres in there you see the white
bits and I often also mix in something
that I can't see here for some reason
must be Neverland yes
sand dust out of the filter of the
sander this word I was sanding that the
dicks are is mainly epoxy doesn't how
some policies with justice very fun so
I'll mix those together it's really um
trying to get as many of the
microspheres in this boss ball but but
mix it up if I'm making a fill it you've
seen me using these these syringes
syringes are used for the fill is
another fine you have to throw my in so
it's a bit wasteful but I find they're
very easy to work with I would do the
same mix I'll reduce microspheres
microfiber and a bit of wood dust and
mix it up for that now what you may have
seen me doing filling the flat parts of
the deck and I mentioned it when it
arrived but I've bought a can of this
this is a bit like the old calf have a
really except it's it's epoxy epoxy
filler two-component epoxy filler black
hardener and the grade filler it's
easily sand of all it's Aeronautics so
further for aircraft and boat industry
and I've only bought it to try it but in
fact it's fantastic I've used it a lot
and I didn't need nearly as much as I
thought livable and the technique really
is is just to mix it up two to one mix
somebody suggested I use a board to mix
it on which I did later mixed on board
and spread it with with some kind of
flat spreader it needs to have a
straight edge of it they feel before
trying to get a flat fill when you just
spread it on and then scrape it off
keeping the fill up on the surface that
you're trying to get level trying to
give in there sorry keeping the scraper
spread up on the surface you're trying
to get level and then I find it needs
the lightest of sands to come out
beautiful flat and it has come out
beautifully flat I'm very very pleased
to itself
I recommend something like that a
two-component easily sandable epoxy
filler also fell from Binker this one
but you can get other brands so that's
what I use for Phyllis and glues and
things I hope that's helped Chris then
the second question - I'll say is it raw
ask me about the four bit and maybe
there's a bit of camera perspective
playing a role here that I eat you
didn't think of it for a theater this
one down there one meter 94 long so this
is what my entire magic but remember
please that there will be a foam cushion
on there fairly thick so it's going to
the whole level will be up wider soak so
we'll be up no that's kind of level sort
of you are never the same so that want
me to focus it will go further down the
boat further forwards and the bus
pesticides the bit we sleep in else 140
why than 180 lime I think there's almost
that big isn't it want me to write the
street song with freedom
I'll write it in there tough to be one
on I doing it very often that's very
nice and as I say remember the cushions
at a high ISO so you've got more hyped
more weeks at the foot and of course on
the other hand the Lord sons they should
be a master boy but it's um there's
plenty refer to people especially when
one of them guess which one is somewhat
shorter than me playing Jairam be fine
as a potential to sleep five Pearlie
birth here on the city hanging out with
Lee plots and we're at sea I used to
play in this one I don't mind the fact
my feet dangle over there it's just fine
so you can't sleep one here for the week
one and a nice well they put a nice wide
berth in there which trust me you can
lay down to a push you sleep five I
don't a white one two four in comfort to
their one on the on the long city one on
the court of Earth in comfort reform for
people there and then one of the reasons
why this week has been a bit slow let's
be honest is well as two reasons one is
when you paint the deck it stinks to
high heaven so don't me answer there is
the shuttle share that leave it alone
so painting you know you get a coat on a
day you something for two cups a day
that's all pretty much you do in the
shade but the other thing which is the
money in reason why things have been a
little slow and this rate is that we
actually carry and I took the
opportunity that we can to go up and
visit hazel and we took a boat out for a
sail with hazel locals three of us went
out for a weekend sailing yeah a goal
was to go out to visit the German North
Sea Islands which we did we we so up out
of the body where she's anchored with F
twenty miles I found that the by in
varying wind conditions then we followed
a tiny little channel in behind the
island of Mincy other lovely that tidal
channel muck with bits of tree steep
stuck in the mud we're on their way
through their the tide and a
fair of breeze
and when dr. Spock right basil of red
was a suitable Anchorage but we had a
good look at it and we didn't like it so
we decided not stay tonight there
we then passed out of a passage between
the first two islands mr. Putin probably
Langer who I think the next month not
sure they know rude or something like
that and then out into the North Sea and
it was blowing 25 knots or so force five
or so north seas and fairly deep waters
where the character mm but luckily we
were running us out big waves when he
got in helping develop really an issue
ran back around and back down into the
bay back down to villains half of him
and took a bath down there for the night
and then the following day we just went
out a little bit and to get back through
the lock and back to that hope marina
that was lovely weekend we've got a big
wind and salt wheat you know skins
peeling of it and but it was it was a
good weekend nice to be out on the water
and that guy's is it for this week see
you next time
give thumbs up or even better please hit
that subscribe button and you next time
