The deck fillers for diesel and water are fitted and the forward mast partners fitting is completed and pre-drilled. The top step of the fancy new companionway steps is fabricated and I buy a DeWALT orbital sander :-) This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build. These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. [Music]
soon we'll see what
[Music]
hi all i'm tony this is esp de patria
we're building a cruising sailboat and
this week has been
all about several things actually um
you'll remember
that last time we cut holes for the deck
fillers for the diesel tank and the
water tank
as you diesel tank and water tank um
got the filler caps fitted sealed in
uh that was well for the diesel filler
on the after that was easy enough but
for the water
filler had to go into the filler pipe
that i'd already had in place that was a
bit of a struggle but but we got it in
kerry and i did that together so that's
in
done quite a lot of work on the mast
fitting and
drilled the holes in the forward deck
ready to
ready to fill again drill again and then
fit the thing
um worked quite a bit on the
companionway stairs as well the first
stair is pretty much ready to go now
and other than that there's been a lot
of ordering a lot of thinking through
um interior is is getting close to being
finished and
close you know i think i said that last
week didn't i
i've ordered some hardwood for the sole
cabin seoul so that's on its way and one
or two other bits the chimney for the
stove is ordered
plus a control unit for that so
things are coming that will be that will
be needed
to finish off in here and it's quite
exciting
let's have a look shall we
[Music]
[Applause]
hmm
it's supposed to go in there like that
they look pretty good
just drop that in there
right around which is going to be
somewhere like that
put our screw through
all there
slowly it's faster sometimes doesn't it
okay that's that bit ready
it's coming in
[Applause]
then
[Music]
[Applause]
part of the shot
[Music]
uh
[Music]
so i'm gonna pretend to drill this one
now
so yeah
[Applause]
[Music]
in the middle
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Applause]
is
[Applause]
TRUE
[Music]
[Applause]
uh
[Music]
[Music]
[Applause]
ugh
[Applause]
hey
[Music]
so
and here it is it's a polish up
but um that'll be going on this week i'm
quite pleased with it
it's quite substantial strong these lugs
are a good size obviously webs that
support the whole structure but they
double up
they've also got nice big holes so you
can fix a
shackle to them and a block or whatever
it is you wish to fix to
also make a good fixing for a for a
webbing or a rope
for clipping lifelines onto so anything
that needs
a stable fixing those are ideal for and
the junk has rather a lot of lines that
control the sails so
you need quite a lot of blocks at the
bottom of the mast so that's the
thinking there
it looks good some of my worlds are
better than others
some look great some could be better but
there you go
done should be fitting that
but those of you who know me will know
that i use quite a lot of
bosch tools a lot of these bosch tools
12 volt rechargeables and generally i'm
very happy with them that
i think i find them you know to be a
reasonable standard for their money
um yeah and they work fine you know what
you're getting pretty much
but i've got something to say and
in the unlikely event of the people of
bosch listening to this
take heed the orbital sander the bosch
orbital sander
i've been using these different models i
think i've owned three of them
i've been using them since the early
1990s
and i've always been very happy with
them until recently
and you know there are a few maintenance
things you have to do to these things
the bearings in the shaft go sometimes
this one's got a bit of play
but the biggest thing you have to do as
you may well know is change that
hook and eye velcro pad because they
wear out
um but as i say i've been using them for
decades
they generally last very a long time
these hook-and-eye pads
but recently i've noticed the standard
has got worse
i it's my opinion at least that the
standards have got worse
standard has got worse and uh
now even with a new hook and ipad it
seems to me that they're only lasting
a short while before you're sanding away
and the pad flies off
and that's a bit frustrating because
you know the pads themselves are not
cheap so
i've taken the plunge and
bought
a dewalt and so far i have to say
i'm happy with it early days but um it's
runs much smoother than the bosch that i
can certainly say
we'll see how the how the longevity is
how it stands up to
for use and abuse let's face it
but that is a pretty good bit of hook
and eye isn't it impressive
[Applause]
that's quite good
[Music]
[Applause]
[Applause]
[Applause]
so
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
um
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Applause]
now
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Applause]
and us to there
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Applause]
okay so that goes on
it's okay
[Applause]
[Applause]
that's good
[Applause]
yeah that's okay i think
and here's a that's top step as it is
so far ready to go in now
um good solid bit of recycled mahogany
should put a bit of non-slip on the top
obviously but on ship
but yeah it's come out well please for
that and the second step will also be a
bit of recycled mahogany so
that's still to come that's it for this
week
