We're back after a short break and ready to go! Time to get this project finished!
This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!
If you'd like to throw a few bucks in the boat building kitty in appreciation of the efforts here, you can do this by;

0:22
hi i'm tony this is sv tapatio and 2022
0:27
so uh very very happy new year to you i
0:30
hope you've had a great one obviously
0:31
we've been away for a couple of weeks uh
0:34
been a been a bit of a gap in the video
0:35
series but we're back
0:37
fresh
0:38
in the first week of 2022.
0:41
yeah
0:41
it's been a bit up and down weather-wise
0:43
during that time and work on the boat's
0:45
been a bit sporadic let's be honest
0:47
clearly we've had you know christmas new
0:50
year's
0:51
in the way and a family visit which was
0:54
very nice
0:55
and then we've had varying weather we've
0:58
had some cold frosty stuff
1:13
um and we've had some a few days several
1:15
days where it's over 10 degrees so um
1:18
what's been possible have been a bit bit
1:20
varied you know
1:21
in that cold stuff you can't do anything
1:23
outdoors you can't paint you can't epoxy
1:25
outdoors it's too cold for anything to
1:27
to set off properly but um
1:29
as i said a few days over 10 degrees
1:31
where i did get some paint on and you'll
1:32
see that soon
1:34
and i think well certainly since new
1:36
year's since since the first of jan
1:38
progress has been pretty good one other
1:40
thing of course is that you may remember
1:42
a while back you know a couple of years
1:44
ago
1:45
i suggested that um
1:47
2021 would be the year that would be
1:49
launching this boat but
1:51
as you may notice
1:53
that didn't happen
1:54
um but i should make a bold statement
1:57
now
1:58
i would do everything in my power
2:01
to launch this boat this year 2022 we
2:04
want to get her in the water and i
2:06
should be working hard to get that done
2:09
we're close we're close need a kill need
2:12
to hang the rudder
2:13
the engine needs to be running make some
2:15
masts
2:17
ship her up to some to a boat yard
2:19
obviously but very very close um and
2:21
those things will be getting on pushing
2:23
to get that done get her in the water
2:26
this year sometime
2:28
well
2:29
i mentioned the motor the fact that
2:31
that's it's not quite ready to start up
2:33
yet there's one or two things still to
2:35
do and one of the things i have done is
2:37
as you might see behind me
2:39
i walk over
2:42
i hope the camera stayed focused
2:45
you might see behind me there a bronze
2:47
through heart i see exhaust through hull
2:49
i'll step to one side so you can see it
2:51
shining behind me
2:52
this is all throughout so i had to get
2:54
the exhaust in and finally connected up
2:58
use the lloyd's approved rubber hose as
3:00
is standard for exhausts and we're
3:02
coming down from the engine
3:05
uh out exhaust manifold down to a to a
3:07
water collector
3:09
then up to a gooseneck muffler and then
3:11
down so that bronze
3:14
to that bronze through hull
3:16
and it's gone in very tiredly i'm
3:17
pleased i'll show you the the system
3:19
it's very hard to film in there in the
3:21
engine room when i'm in the engine room
3:23
to actually film me doing anything it's
3:25
very tricky but i'll take the camera in
3:28
there now and show you the way it's come
3:29
out and it's come up very tightly i'm
3:31
pleased
3:32
particularly in that i haven't got
3:34
exhaust hose draped through half the
3:36
boat which is commonly the case
3:40
so this is a very tidy installation i
3:42
feel
3:50
wow
4:20
[Applause]
4:33
i hope so
5:06
got that
5:28
yeah so here we are under the bimini and
5:30
and a couple of things have happened in
5:32
this cockpit area i shall
5:34
i should grab the camera and show you
5:36
them
5:37
so first of all there's a flock of geese
5:39
going over there
5:41
um
5:42
we live out here in in the country here
5:44
and this you know you'll hear background
5:45
noises tractors going down the road
5:48
here the geese
5:50
anyhow i'm pointing the camera at the at
5:52
the engine control panel and you may
5:54
remember i changed its location so that
5:56
it's now underneath the chart plotter
5:59
and it's in
6:00
and
6:01
please right there looks great
6:03
and while we're here
6:04
the other thing that's been finished
6:06
look
6:07
is the engine control lever
6:10
got i say there are a few warm days i
6:12
managed to get coats of paint on there
6:14
there are
6:15
six six coats of epoxy primer a couple
6:18
of coats of top coat
6:20
and it's finished and looking good
6:41
and
6:51
hmm
7:03
huh
7:28
[Applause]
7:39
[Applause]
8:06
[Applause]
8:17
[Applause]
8:30
[Applause]
8:36
[Applause]
8:38
[Music]
8:47
[Applause]
9:06
josh very close
10:11
ah
10:12
there we go
10:28
be that long there
10:44
all right
11:10
and i lost one
11:33
uh
11:52
it's just hilarious
11:54
sitting there
11:59
i am a tree
12:26
[Applause]
12:28
[Music]
13:18
um oh
13:42
yep
13:47
yep
13:51
[Applause]
14:22
well here's the
14:23
there's the back of the
14:25
engine control panel and plotter
14:28
and as you might tell i'm just starting
14:29
to put a box around that to hide all of
14:32
that
14:33
um i shall save that bit of video for
14:35
next week when it's finished and i can
14:37
show you that in one
14:38
one swoop but um i've got a nmea
14:43
2000 network coming in
14:46
the engine control panel to uh engine
14:49
connection loom
14:50
going in there and and much of that will
14:52
be hidden in it in this box this tick
14:54
box i'm making up from some bits of old
14:57
miss molly leftover teeth
14:59
uh but i say save that one for next week
15:00
for you
15:03
and behind me you'll see the the foam
15:05
cut to shape now for the rebirth made a
15:09
nice big rebirth in there um it is long
15:11
enough for me to lay down in uh i it's
15:14
even with it with the raised height that
15:16
this phone gives because gives me room
15:17
enough to get my feet beside the mast so
15:20
you know it'll be fine it's comfy
15:26
[Music]
15:33
do
15:35
[Music]
15:44
[Music]
16:27
do
16:31
[Music]
17:05
this
17:06
here is the last piece of foam that i've
17:08
just bought this will be going into
17:10
quarter birth as you may remember i did
17:12
already cut a piece of foam for the
17:13
quarterback but
17:15
it's a bit of old mattress mattress is
17:17
very heavy and
17:18
i'm so happy with this foam it's it's
17:21
comfortable and yet light
17:23
i decided to buy some more foam redo
17:25
that bit in the quarterback
17:27
i'd cut foam with a with a bread knife
17:30
there's various ways to cut foam but i
17:32
like a bread knife it's low-tech it's
17:35
easy
17:36
um
17:37
some people prefer an electric bread
17:39
knife which obviously saves them to move
17:41
their arm to and fro but i'm happy
17:43
enough with just a regular bread knife i
17:45
mark it out with a marker pen it's
17:47
actually the same marker pen set that i
17:50
bought for the lofting lines so they've
17:52
they've done well they weren't very
17:54
expensive but marker pen use a sliding
17:57
bevel to get the angles um and then cut
17:59
those let's say with a bread knife
18:02
carefully and it comes out well
18:04
certainly good enough for the likes of
18:06
me
18:07
um
18:09
the upholstery cloth that i i've
18:10
mentioned in previous episodes has
18:13
arrived
18:15
and uh looks great and we'll be getting
18:17
on to taking these cushions out
18:20
individually
18:21
and uh covering them
18:23
soon certainly if this sort of weather
18:25
goes on very soon indeed it's chilly
18:53
okay that's the right color at least
19:07
[Music]
19:21
cup of
19:22
tea
19:24
