This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!

0:34
hi i'm tony and this is the story of the
0:38
build of this 31 foot 8 inch jay benford
0:41
designed cruising sailboat
0:43
from the lofting of the lines to our
0:46
emerging from the boat sheds to receiver
0:48
keel masterson all the other
0:50
paraphernalia that make up a cruising
0:52
vessel
0:54
join us on this adventure as we
0:56
build topacha and hopefully set off to
0:59
test her out as a liverboard cruising
1:02
vessel
1:03
[Music]
1:09
aisle
1:10
well no video last week it's just too
1:14
busy with other stuff around and about
1:16
that i got
1:17
such a little bit done on the boat
1:19
project that there wasn't really nothing
1:21
to show here
1:22
but uh here we are another week later
1:25
i've uh i've got on a bit now
1:27
and we started off with the kill really
1:29
been attacking on two fronts this week
1:32
the kill finishing getting towards
1:34
getting some paint on it really so i
1:36
wanted to get some filler around the
1:38
various joints some tape over the aft
1:40
end
1:41
and something that a pano from from
1:43
arctic sea camel asked about
1:46
last time was the holes down beside
1:49
the kill bolts
1:50
where they come through what i would do
1:52
with those and i filled those with epoxy
1:56
and to do that i
1:57
rather like to use these little syringes
1:59
like little big syringes
2:02
it's a was it 60 milliliter syringe
2:05
get them from the local pharmacy only
2:07
cost a couple of euro
2:09
um i think they're not even that much
2:12
and
2:13
very good for controlled epoxy if it's
2:16
just pure resin or a thin thinly
2:19
thickened
2:20
epoxy very very good for getting it in a
2:22
very controlled manner
2:24
and if you give them a rinse out with a
2:26
bit of acetone afterwards you get
2:28
several uses out of them as well so this
2:31
one's been used three times already and
2:33
it's still good for another go
2:35
really good so that's what i did there
2:38
and then there was a major milestone on
2:40
the boat
2:43
[Applause]
2:45
so i put a few little wedges in
2:48
next to the bolts just to make sure
2:50
they're perfectly square
2:52
and i've done a fair bit of measuring
2:54
and they've been very careful
2:56
i say wedge them perfectly square
2:57
upright and now i'm going to squirt some
3:00
epoxy down the holes and the goal is to
3:03
fill these holes with epoxy
3:26
so
3:54
so
4:09
okay
4:36
so
4:43
[Applause]
4:45
[Music]
5:06
so
5:15
just did that full
5:27
forward to the frame
5:53
hello
6:08
then having got all that
6:10
fixed in position
6:12
so they're all nice and firm now those
6:14
bolts they can't come
6:15
wobble in the kill structure at all i
6:18
then wanted to make up a new template to
6:21
the bolts
6:22
that are drilled precisely and mark the
6:25
exact locations of bolts just to make
6:27
sure that it lined up with the holes in
6:28
the bottom of the boat so
6:31
here is my template if you can see those
6:33
holes
6:34
there you go
6:36
some lovely holes through there but
6:38
marks the exact positions of the bolts
6:41
and then i could
6:43
firstly lay under the boat get it up in
6:45
position which is very difficult to show
6:47
in fact i've got a couple of screws
6:48
through it screwed up into position
6:51
check the hole positions under the boat
6:53
and then inside of course in the boat
6:55
it's very very easy just to lay it on
6:57
and the result of that was that i took
6:59
out some of the holes made them a little
7:01
bigger i took them out to 25 millimeter
7:04
one or two of them
7:06
four or five of them i took them out a
7:08
bit bigger just to make
7:10
sure
7:11
that the kill bolts would come up
7:12
through
7:16
it on top of two of them bolts perhaps
7:19
[Applause]
7:41
all right
7:55
hopefully if you turn that over we will
7:57
see
7:59
look at that
8:01
[Applause]
8:01
[Music]
8:02
cool method
8:08
[Applause]
8:13
[Applause]
8:47
so
9:06
we've got these solid brass bolts
9:09
and i must admit they're not the most
9:11
expensive but they come with screws
9:13
brass screws
9:14
they're useless utterly useless even
9:16
with pre-drilling they won't go through
9:18
a bit of plywood
9:20
and
9:20
i do wish you may tell i'm not happy
9:24
i do wish companies would just think
9:26
about the stuff they said in this
9:27
because screws that won't go through a
9:29
bit of plywood that's been pre-drilled
9:32
they're useless why bother somebody's
9:34
actually produced them all they're fit
9:37
for is throwing away and replacing with
9:39
some better screws are they
9:41
stupid
9:52
one more
10:04
[Applause]
10:20
there we go
10:23
[Applause]
10:37
[Music]
10:44
yeah quite well
10:50
now for weeks between all that keel
10:52
stuff
10:54
i've been working in here in the
10:56
electric bay
10:57
in the engine room behind me and running
11:00
through i've mentioned it a few times
11:02
running through the engine wiring
11:04
connecting up the last pieces
11:07
i had the output wire from the
11:09
alternator to the charge splitter
11:12
to get in there i've got that in this
11:13
week uh one or two other little bits a
11:15
new wire that they did that had the
11:17
right dimensions to the
11:19
so the glow plugs so that went in
11:22
and then it was time to to see about
11:25
getting on
11:27
starting that engine
11:30
and so
11:32
let's have a look
11:34
[Music]
11:49
[Music]
11:58
i'll grab the camera
12:00
so this is me now camera in hand
12:02
showing you
12:04
the raw water filter
12:06
behind that diesel filter with a bit of
12:08
diesel in it as you can see
12:10
um and these
12:12
this is a little
12:14
md 2010 volvo penta engine
12:17
they're notorious for having very weak
12:20
lift pumps so you've got the little
12:21
lever on the lift pump
12:23
for bleeding through but they don't do a
12:25
right lot
12:27
and actually the one on hazel has got a
12:29
yamah 2g m20 it's also not the best
12:33
so the solution
12:35
i did first of all
12:37
was to fit
12:38
one of these squeezy bulbs we've done
12:41
the same in hazel's boat
12:43
which allows you to pump some diesel
12:45
through very effectively for bleeding
12:46
things out
12:48
and blend it through
12:50
hooked it up and you'll see what happens
13:06
hmm
13:21
[Applause]
13:27
so
13:35
[Applause]
13:46
press the start button oh hold on no
13:49
net now try
13:51
okay good press the start button that's
13:53
the big one
13:58
lovely thank you
14:00
that's truly good now
14:02
next thing we're going to do is you're
14:04
going to give me that watering can
14:06
because
14:07
i have this highly technical piece of
14:08
pipe here that was designed
14:11
to go on there
14:14
look
14:16
so with a bit of luck i can feel that up
14:20
and it leaking out all over the place
14:27
right now what you're gonna have to do
14:31
we'll see what happens you're gonna have
14:32
to give it full throttle which is all
14:34
the way down
14:35
i'll tell you
14:37
good that's lovely
14:39
and then
14:41
switch it on which it may already still
14:43
be on is it no
14:44
okay turn it on and then press that
14:46
little button up for the glow plugs for
14:48
about 10 seconds
14:49
a little toggle switch
14:54
good now press the stop button
15:06
[Applause]
15:10
oh dude
15:16
where is it sucking the seat water from
15:18
there
15:19
do you have a bucket in there i've got a
15:20
filter i'll fill that with water again
15:22
oh see good let's do it again there we
15:24
go
15:27
yeah do it just in case
15:31
of course i have to stop it with the
15:32
stop lever which is this one here isn't
15:34
it yeah okay i can stop it here good
15:36
ready
15:38
go
15:44
yeah
15:46
this is switch on
16:06
yeah well pleased with that good call
16:08
out today i think now
16:13
well i've since replaced that squeezy
16:15
bulb with this little manual pump that
16:17
i'm
16:18
showing you with the camera
16:21
it's a it's a push pull pump
16:23
i'm not going to pump it for you because
16:25
it pressurizes the diesel system
16:27
but it's very nice
16:29
mechanical you know a hand pump and they
16:32
are wonderful for bleeding through
16:34
and
16:35
hopefully longer lasting than the old
16:37
squeezy bowl
16:38
so that's looking pretty cool i think
16:40
very tidy diesel system
16:42
and i am very pleased
16:59
[Applause]
17:19
here
17:22
[Applause]
17:42
thank you
17:56
[Applause]
18:03
so
18:14
[Applause]
18:39
this is the anchor box huh yeah
18:42
let's have a look step back okay the
18:44
anchor chain box yeah yeah yeah looks
18:46
nice doesn't it and then if i go up past
18:48
here we see the bow roller
18:50
that's all good all good
18:53
and there
18:54
were all the mounted up there so trying
18:55
to run down the port side
18:58
and around into that box we need a
19:00
couple of bigger cleats because those
19:01
cleats aren't big enough only
19:05
good
19:17
what are you lot up to
19:21
all right
19:35
all right
19:36
now we slide that little plastic cover
19:39
over that like that
19:41
there we go
19:43
and if all is well that should fit
19:49
get your t-shirts
19:50
now yeah on there perfect okay so now
19:54
we're going to spot the alternator up
20:08
[Music]
20:18
like that this whole cabana goes on the
20:21
back of that lot
20:27
one
20:29
two
20:30
and three
20:32
oh and there's one on the floor
20:40
it really sticks out
20:42
yes it's a lot cleaner than this
20:45
okay so we're going to try this
20:47
continental belt that we
20:49
live in hopefully we'll let you fit
20:57
let's find out what happens when we do
20:59
this
21:15
right okay well that continental boat
21:17
belt does not fit
21:21
all right let's have a look
21:25
all fixed down i've been putting that on
21:28
there with a loop
21:29
fix the bitter end of the chain too
21:33
catch on there obviously
21:35
it's a thing of beauty isn't it
21:38
yeah it blends in well it's amazing how
21:40
close that color is to that color and
21:42
yeah it's basically the same
21:44
more about that in judgment
21:46
[Laughter]
21:52
and ladies and gentlemen that is it for
21:54
this week
21:56
working on two boats we'll carry on for
21:58
another couple of weeks working on two
22:00
boats
22:01
hazel hopes to set off sailing for a
22:04
summer cruising
22:06
in mid-june should we say mid to late
22:08
june
22:09
so still got a few bits to do there
22:12
um
22:13
just wanted to give a shout out to for
22:16
one of the patrons uh chris he's he's
22:20
got a caramel 26 jungle commercial 26
22:23
that
22:24
is currently in northern holland and uh
22:28
he wants to sell it so it's up for sale
22:30
i'll post a link in the description
22:34
maybe a picture in a minute
22:42
um it's a vote you know i know of the
22:45
vote i must admit i've never seen it but
22:47
i know that he sailed it from
22:50
ireland white area uh all the way to
22:53
northern holland so it's clearly very
22:55
capable
22:56
and uh i also know that he's he's a you
22:59
know he's the sort of guy that maintains
23:01
a boat very well so it'll be looked
23:03
after the vote then what is interested
23:05
in a
23:06
26 foot junk rigger it's one up for
23:08
grabs
23:11
and there we go that's it for this week
23:12
thanks for watching
23:14
all that youtube stuff
23:16
see you soon bye
23:23
um
23:25
[Music]
23:26
[Applause]
23:26
[Music]
23:31
[Applause]
23:32
[Music]
23:37
[Applause]
23:40
is
23:43
[Music]
23:50
okay
23:55
[Music]
24:06
you
