Visit these guys to see my boat improvements. https://www.youtube.com/c/SlimSophSailingNakama
This week its a bit of a different video. I want to introduce you to some fellow YouTubers and well, friends of mine. Slim & Soph are to young Uni students, living and sailing around Australia on their small boat. After lots of back and forth we finally met up at lovely Magnetic Island. As we'd both been on the hard-stand fixing our boats at the same time we thought it would be interesting to show our respective boat improvements on each others channels. So to see the work I did you'll have to go on over to their channel(https://www.youtube.com/c/SlimSophSailingNakama)

G'day guys, welcome back to another freaking episode here on Learning By Doing .
Something a little different for you this week and sorry, I normally put my videos on Tuesday
but this one's a bit later, Saturday today so yeah. Something a bit different today, i'm gonna showcase
some friends of mine and hopefully uh you guys will like their channel and subscribe to them
and the sort of counters they're gonna do the same on their channel with me so it's a bit of cross
pollination why not introduce you to some class acts on youtube that's the way i'm looking at it i
love these guys i've been watching them for quite a while i wouldn't bring you any dross any rubbish
only the best here and um the channel in question is called slim and sofe they're a young australian
couple uh both students uni students yeah they're on a little duncanson 34 they've done a fair bit
of work to it in the past you know old boats you're always doing work to them but they've
just been out on the hard stand at the same time i was and so they've done a lot of upgrades that
they're very proud of and that's going to make their lives better and so i go aboard their boat
and ask them about them that's what this video is about and i'm showing it on my channel and as
you guys know i did a lot of upgrades on my boat and they came on my boat and asked me what i've
done this is what i like about these guys the banter the funny you know they're intelligent
they're smart buggers they go to university not like me i left school when i was 15. so you know
i learned from them but they are they're pretty funny they've got good sense of music they got
a good banter between them so here's a little montage of funny moments i found and then after
that we'll get straight to the video enjoy guys oh i probably sound weird because without sneeze
and we're off it's day one and we've eaten all of our dorm arties
oh we're going on an adventure yeah that's what it is we're going on an adventure
we're on the move again we're doing stuff we're taking you with us
it is looking smick looks absolutely [ __ ] she is looking like a classy it's a bit of a
day for it whoa even my foot's gone going mad for it when i said that we had a plan
we have no idea what it is you know what she means man no i know he meant it's 9 a.m and
i smell like diesel and engine oil it's like coco chanel for queenslanders how's
look at this and then look how nice that is who was straight i told you not to stress well
i don't know and they're massive poos as well they're like thick clay poops eggs
i'm making eggs and i'm making eggs and soaps down in here making eggs
definitely stale bueno bueno is that what it is is bueno good uh
i don't know i can't speak italian bon appetit oh i do speak italian
there we go i think i'm done with this video yeah yeah g'day guys i'm here with the guys from
knackers formerly are you back in australia now so yeah now because i'm getting the lingo down now
so what's the name of your boat nakama nakama i figure you guys that watch my channel will really
love watching these guys i i do i discovered them a year or so ago and really like they're they're
basically your vibe between you guys is really cool they're banter good music so we decided to
do a little something different they've just been over on my boat filming me talking about
all the upgrades i've done the last couple of months and that's going to come out on their
channel hopefully yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah right no you got you go first one and you go
first man basically because we've been on the hard stand and doing all the stuff at the same time in
different places and now we're just starting off on our adventures we crossed over here they're
going north i'm going south yeah we're going to see what upgrades they've made and you guys are
going to see that and if you want to see what upgrades happened on my boat you got to go over
their channels we just sailed overnight from early to get here so to see yeah we could have
taken our time no but no no yeah we didn't want to miss our chance to say good day because we've
been yarning online and while we've been doing these jobs going yeah but our boat's gonna look
schmidt can't wait to see yours and it would have been it would have been a real bummer if we didn't
get to check each other's progress out all right so show us what you've done the most exciting bit
we haven't had instruments at all we've basically just run with a depth sounder
and we we have had an autopilot for about a year now which has changed our lives but
we haven't had a chat plotter we haven't had wind instruments we haven't had
our speed log and this summer last six months we've just installed these babies so we've got
wind speed and depth here we've got a secondhand chart plotter thank you grant and this is our um
autopilot but we also have one more chart plotter now we don't just have like one chart plotter
we have two chart plotters so we've gone from having a 300 mobile phone as a chart plotter and
we always had a debt sounder which was good too having two shot thought is pretty luxurious really
this is our second chart plotter um so basically now everything's interconnected and we can um
change our autopilot from down here so if we're like in rainy conditions and it's horrible outside
we can basically just like sit on a nav table and like have control of you know what's going
on with the wind and everything and that's displayed down here so that's like i can't
even explain we're so excited by that because we have had gone from nothing to now just like a full
operational system in foul conditions particularly like we're pretty low to the water too so when
it's when it's horrible out there and you're the only one on watch and all you really need
to be doing is looking at the lights like now we can sort of put our head up here and there
into the weather have a bit of a squeeze around but if we can make adjustments from down here on
the autopilot and that's just insane we never believe in boat fans until we met these and
after doing a delivery on a bavaria for a mate i was like dude your fans actually worked so we've
researched them and got one of these and reason being is someone will be studying here or editing
and the other one sort of gets a little bit of breeze up there but if we open this hatch
we can get this closed sometimes it doesn't leak and we don't jinx it and we don't open
it so there's not much airflow here so the poor sucker which was generally soap and video editing
and all that she needed a fan so this it might seem little but it's a big deal that was the
beginning of us trying to wire more neatly so we were really proud of the fact that that wasn't
installed with zip ties going through here we decided that was the beginning of us trying
to get a bit better with our electrical work yeah are you a fan of the fan i'm a fan of the fan man
the reason we started getting new things like fans and stuff like that is
what's taken up most of our time this summer is we've gone through like an extensive electronics
upgrade so just below my ankles right now just next to our kitty litter is power points like
a house now this is huge for us because we again both being full-time uni students and the editing
we have laptops going constantly cameras going drones going so we
having power boards in the boat now without power boards on the floor that we're just
a tripping hazard there a broken ankle hazard so this is huge and we've got one in the galley
we've also massive upgrade and a luxury for us we've got ourselves a little freezer here
and sorry the quarterback and nest because this is our sort of our storage but super exciting
frozen berries frozen bananas and we're heading to the tropics so it's just going to be so good
that's the money shot right there this isn't a boat job per such but one thing we did do this
summer is we came to terms with the fact that this was our quarterback like our guest bedroom
and we've officially we're calling at the shed now and i've never felt better about
something ever having a designated shed space on the boat is so good especially because we got rid
of the car we used to call the car the shed but the shed it's good coming to terms with the fact
that's the shed and if someone wants to come on the boat and sleep on the couch so in the past
this was just a spaghetti-like mess of random connections lots of dead wire and inline fuses
but we've taken that all back to trip switches here i believe they're called isolation switches
we have two 100 amp hour lithium batteries and they're also connected to we just have a lead acid
starter battery ourselves our dc-dc charger is located in here which again that stops these just
pulling away for lack of a better terms just destroying our alternator by pulling way more
energy than it can give out so that will just regulate that and flow through this our starter
gets juiced up by our wind generator if we ever need b and then when this is full it will overflow
to the lithium as well and the solar just runs directly into the lithium now um the solar is
another thing that we've upgraded as well because our old panels got destroyed and i think they
couldn't keep up with their fridge and we we had more pulling on them than what they could actually
produce and we basically rid off their old solar panels so we've upgraded our solar system as well
to keep the batteries happy so it's it's an entirely new power station here aboard nakano
so we were sick of being dripped on we had cracks leaky windows and we put in these bad boys and
they are not leaking they're beautiful and clear and we can see the world and we love them yeah
so far no leaks which is amazing our old ones fell victim to the screws that held them in because
the thicker ends the perspex and screws would all expand at different rates and stuff in it
they just got cracked progressively worse and worse so we've actually we've taken a bit of
a risk a lot of people have asked just let us know how they hold up so everyone has lots of
doubts about this whether they're going to fall out while we're sailing one day
we just did a 24-hour sail they're still here they're still holding on tight yeah we're really
stoked with them and it's so nice being you can just see out the windows now old ones had so many
micro cracks through them that it was just this glary mess that it wasn't much of a window anymore
yes we've got a cockpit light too guys cheers nice to meet you after a week's yarn about it
right guys thanks for your time there and watching that one um that sounded so [ __ ]
thanks for your time right guys um if you've already forgotten i'm slim and
this is soph um we hope you enjoyed having a bit of a sticky beak around our boat and
everything we've been up to getting ready for this up and coming cruising season our plan is
i don't even like saying it out loud a lot but we already said it in other places before but we are
attempting to get over the top of australia and into wa we have a bit of a contingency plan
being darwin but i guess the plan is overall is to keep sailing forwards keeping australia
to the left and everything else just sort of falls into place along those lines i'm sure
we might know some of you but i bet we don't know all of you so if you've enjoyed what you've seen
today and you might want to see some more of what we get up to then please do feel free to go and
check out our channel and if you want to see what vernon's been up to and his upgrades in the last
couple of months you can check out his video or his upgrades on our channel so you'll have to hop
on to our channel anyway to see what he's been up to in his upgrades and what he's done to the boat
he might as well watch a couple videos while he's here throw us a phone you won't regret it and if
you do write a nasty comment about it or don't just be nice on my channel yeah yeah yeah right
getting things done where i would just procrastinate endlessly and toil so soph gets
the ball well and truly rolling and we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for drive i guess his red hair
i don't have much of that left come on you need another feature because that one's running out
well i mean same thing we wouldn't be here without you either because you've got a lot of drive and
a lot you're full of ambition and add a ball of energy to tackle anything that lays ahead of you
so complement each other yeah we both drive different sections of the bus if that makes sense
and we actually were speaking about that today when we were
sailing we were here and we were like we actually said to each other we're like
we're interested in doing this as a duo i actually and maybe with more years of experience but the
idea of doing it single-handed bewilders me i like having someone to confide in and i like
we definitely do have our still quiet moments of reflection where we feel like we have our
own space out there but i definitely feel like in times of uh uncertainty or anything like that and
there is a lot of uncertainty in sailing i mean sailing is that's why i like sailing because
it's uncertain um but i like having someone to bounce ideas with and everything as we go
okay this is a big debate because simon would probably say cat but
i i i do like mono hulls and i think there's something special about sailing motto hull
but also catamarans are very comfortable can i answer it like a lawyer wouldn't in all honesty
i'd probably buy a hundred thousand dollar boat and a four hundred dollar thousand dollar house
that i could rent to continue sailing like for me i like sailing not the boat like yeah you have the
same view as anyone else so i don't i've thought about that at times like my goal is to get nakama
exactly where we want her and we're on that progress i don't
yeah yeah buy a cheaper boat and have a bigger cruising fund that's 100
it's just something fun about it i like when the boat's on a
lean not dead downwind you know like yeah you know broad reach
either mana ray bay or double or double island point lagoon really yeah i was
gonna say musgrave there's something about adults that sounds so australian adults
we always say like do it when you can not when you're ready because it'll never be ready we're
standing here right now probably not entirely ready um you'll never be ready nothing will
ever be perfect so you just got to do it and then you'll have the time of your life chasing
your tail there you go guys hope you enjoyed that one a little bit different obviously but i really
want to introduce you to slim and soph and i hope you'll click the link down below in the
description and head over their channel and check their stuff out they're on a pretty cool adventure
they're actually circumnavigating australia this year they're going over to darwin and kimberly
up the top and um yeah they're doing it in india in their own style it's super cool to see on news
relating to us maria's back we are back to live actually this is the last video that i'm editing
and filming without marie from next week on we are live so we are here in the sundays we will
be filming and sailing the whitsundays and you guys will see it basically four or five days after
we've filmed it we'll be putting it out for you guys to watch and we've never been that up to date
before so we hope you appreciate that and if you see us and you're in the wet sundays we are still
here it's not like three months behind like normal so come over and say hi we've been meeting so many
people so many fans so many um patrons and people that are just coming up to say hi and inviting us
for a beer or whatever and it's it's awesome it's super cool to meet you all and um super generous
and nice people were meeting it's it's an actual big highlight for us and it was actually fully
unexpected so yeah really really cool tune in next week for adventures in the wet sundays
